Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Offei- Awuku.
Hi Derrick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Music has always been part of my life but i released my first official single in 2017 titled “Let it go”. Over the years i have had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest act on the continent such as Patoranking, Kwesi, Arthur, Kelyvn Boy and Ayo Beatz. I have also had the opportunity to write for some talented acts such as Gyakie and a few other musicians. As an artiste i have evolved from just been a musician to become a business. I currently own The Root Entertainment with my co partners. We are a full blown company who run talent management, we manage the likes of myself Offei, Afrolektra: a music producer and dj who is doing an incredible job in the Ghanaian and African music space, working with the likes of Black Sheriff, R2bees, Gyakie, Lasmid and more and Babawvd: a music producer who has worked with amazing talents such as Camidoh, Manifest, Darkovibes etc. At the Root Entertainment, we also organize events both in Ghana and Maryland. The aim is to create a full service company that operates both in Ghana and in the states. I’m currently working on my latest Extended Play (EP) titled MEGA. scheduled for release in October.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Just as life, the journey will have its ups and down which basically part of our life cycle so i have encountered a number of obstacles both in Ghana and the states. Every obstacle is an opportunity for the team and myself to learn something new, upgrade our skillset and broaden our horizon. Examples of some of the obstacles are finance, limited human resources and a few others
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Offei is a Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and guitarist who describes music as a “sixth sense”: a powerful extension of emotion and human connection. Known for blending soulful melodies with contemporary African sounds, he has collaborated with notable acts including Patoranking, Kwesi Arthur and Amartey. Beyond his artistry, Offei is also an accomplished songwriter, with credits on Unconditional Love by Gyakie and several other notable records. Offei is ushering in a new chapter in his career with work on his forthcoming Extended Play. The project’s first single, Backa: an Afrobeats and Amapiano-inspired collaboration featuring Kelyvn Boy and Producer Afrolektra
