Check Out Darrell Stoney’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell Stoney.

Hi Darrell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Before the world saw my photography, what inspired me to get started was my love for architecture and the beauty of nature. Whenever I visited the beach or went on my early morning walks, I was captivated by the way the sunlight painted the sky with different colors. Every sunrise seemed to create a masterpiece, and I wanted to preserve those moments through photography.
One day, while I was in Virginia Beach, I stopped by a pawn shop and bought my very first camera. From that moment on, I began photographing the skies, landscapes, architecture, and anything else that caught my eye. What started as a simple desire to capture the beauty I saw around me became a true passion and the beginning of my photography journey.

As my passion for photography grew, I started taking my camera everywhere. I began photographing high school football games, capturing memories of friends, family, and the excitement on the field. Before long, I found myself covering concerts, community events, mayoral events, 5K races, and the annual DC High School Turkey Bowl. No matter where something was happening, my camera was with me.

Every event became an opportunity to tell a story through my lens. I loved capturing genuine moments—the excitement, the emotions, and the memories that people could look back on for years to come. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into a passion for documenting life’s most meaningful moments and serving my community through photography.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the challenges I faced were really learning experiences. Since I was self-taught, I had to learn how to use all the camera functions, understand lighting, and master the different settings on my own. Every mistake became an opportunity to improve my skills and grow as a photographer. Looking back, I don’t consider them struggles—I consider them valuable lessons that helped shape me into the photographer I am today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets me apart as a professional photographer/videographers is not only my photography skills but also my background in sales and marketing. Those skills have helped me build strong relationships with clients and create a brand that stands out.

One thing I take great pride in is sharing the knowledge I’ve gained through years of trial and error with other photographers and young people. No one was there to teach me when I started, so I enjoy mentoring others and helping them avoid some of the challenges I faced along the way.

I’m also well known for my candid photography. Many people call me “The Sniper” because I have a knack for capturing genuine, unposed moments that others often miss. My images are known for being sharp, clean, vibrant, and full of life, preserving authentic memories that people will cherish for years to come.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next five to ten years, I believe artificial intelligence (AI) will play a major role in the photography industry. However, AI can never replace the photographer’s creative eye. If you don’t have the ability to recognize the right lighting, capture genuine facial expressions, anticipate meaningful moments, or tell a story through your lens, AI alone won’t make your images naturally exceptional.

I see AI as a powerful tool that can enhance a photographer’s workflow by assisting with editing, organization, and creative enhancements. But the heart of photography will always be the person behind the camera. Your vision, experience, and ability to capture authentic moments are what truly make an image stand out. AI should be used to complement your natural talent—not replace it.
