Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Godfrey.
Hi Deborah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey has been shaped significantly by my parents. Their experiences, sacrifices, and influence have played a major role in shaping my values, ambition, and drive to pursue my passions. I am a recent Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate passionate about promoting mental wellness and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Beyond mental health, I have a creative side, building my brands, The Vanity Code & The Vanity Agency. Expressing my creativity through fashion, creative direction, marketing, and brand development. As I continue to grow, I aspire to bridge my interests in mental health, entrepreneurship, and public health to create meaningful change both at the individual level and within broader communities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning to step up and adapt to whatever life required of me has been both rewarding and challenging. Throughout my journey, I’ve navigated jobs, internships, school, personal hardships, losses, and gains, all while learning how to prioritize my own mental well-being. Balancing these responsibilities taught me a lot about myself, my resilience, and my capacity to keep going even when things felt overwhelming. There have been plenty of trials and tribulations, but also meaningful moments of growth and accomplishment. I’m still learning, evolving, and discovering who I am outside of the expectations and responsibilities I’ve carried.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work and interests span mental health, entrepreneurship, and the creative space. I’m passionate about developing ideas and bringing visions to life through my ventures, The Vanity Code and The Vanity Agency. Professionally, I’m also pursuing my path toward becoming a licensed mental health therapist in Maryland, with broader interests in public health and improving mental health outcomes. I enjoy bridging the creative and professional worlds, using both creativity and strategic thinking to approach problems, develop ideas, and create meaningful impact. I’m proud of my versatility and my ability to explore different interests while remaining intentional about growth, innovation, and building ventures that align with my vision for the future.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned the importance of choosing myself without feeling guilty about it. I’ve spent a lot of time balancing responsibilities and striving to meet expectations, but I’ve learned that I also have to make myself a priority. That means recognizing when I need to make a decision that aligns with what I need. I’ve learned that choosing myself isn’t selfish in a negative way; it’s necessary. If I’m not taking care of myself, I can’t fully show up for what matters to me.
