Hidden Gems: Meet Marisa Powell of Molecular Melts Creative Scent Lab Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Powell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Molecular Melts Creative Scent Lab Co. started in December 2022 from a simple idea: I wanted to combine two parts of myself that I loved—science and creativity.

My background is in marine science, and I have always had a genuine love for science, but I have also always been a creative person. I love fragrance, experimenting with different scent combinations, photography, branding, and creating things that allow people to express themselves. Candles became a way for me to bring those worlds together. Instead of creating just another candle brand, I wanted Molecular Melts to feel like a creative scent lab, where fragrance combinations are treated almost like formulas and every scent has its own identity, story, and experience. That is where our idea of “Using Science to Relax” really came to life.

I started small, learning everything as I went—from testing waxes, fragrance combinations, and wicks to designing labels, photographing products, building a website, creating social media content, and figuring out the business side of being an entrepreneur. As a Black woman with a background in science, it was also important to me that the brand reflected who I am. I wanted to create something that showed that science can be creative.

Since then, Molecular Melts has grown beyond the original idea. Our collection now includes hand-poured candles, wax melts, and car diffusers, with fragrances ranging from sweet and nostalgic to floral, earthy, clean, tropical, and more. Some of my favorite parts of developing the brand have been creating scents with their own personalities and concepts—products like CO+2, Ocean Rose, Condensation, Cherry on Top, and Moss & Mellow—and then building an entire visual story around them.

I have also had the opportunity to take Molecular Melts outside of the online space through local markets and pop-ups throughout the DMV. Being able to meet customers in person, watch someone smell a fragrance for the first time, and hear them connect with something I created has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

Now, I’m working on the next evolution of Molecular Melts: making the brand more experiential. I’m developing interactive candle-making and fragrance-blending workshops where guests can become “scent scientists,” experiment with fragrance notes, create their own formula, and pour a candle that is completely personal to them. I’m also exploring collaborations with other local creatives to combine candle-making with experiences like painting, jewelry or charm-making, and other hands-on activities that bring different creative communities together.

What started as an idea at the intersection of science and fragrance has gradually become a much bigger creative vision. I’m still growing, experimenting, and learning, but that’s also very fitting for Molecular Melts. It really is a lab—and I do not think I will ever be finished experimenting.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to build and grow a business while also working a full-time job. Molecular Melts is something I have built largely from the ground up, so in the beginning especially, I was wearing every hat. I was the product developer, candle maker, photographer, content creator, graphic designer, website manager, customer service representative, packer, marketer, and everything in between. There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes of a small business that people never see.

Another challenge has been figuring out how to stand out in such a saturated industry. There are so many amazing candle and home fragrance brands, and I knew I did not want Molecular Melts to simply be another candle company. It took time to really understand what made my brand mine. Over time, I became much more confident leaning into the intersection of science, fragrance, storytelling, and creativity rather than trying to follow what every other candle brand was doing.

Visibility has also been a learning experience. You can create a product you genuinely believe in, but people still have to discover it. Learning social media, experimenting with content, attending markets and pop-ups, improving product photography, and finding creative ways to introduce people to the brand have all been part of the process. Sometimes you can spend hours creating something that gets very little attention, while something you almost did not post connects with thousands of people. I have had to learn that growth is not always linear.

There are also the financial realities of being a small business owner. Every new idea—new fragrances, packaging, inventory, vendor events, equipment, marketing, workshops—requires an investment, and I have had to learn when to invest, when to wait, and how to grow without trying to do everything at once. Some ideas have worked beautifully, while others have simply become lessons for the next experiment.

I think one of the biggest lessons has been learning not to measure my progress against someone else’s timeline. When you are building something while balancing a career and everyday life, growth can sometimes feel slower than you want it to. But when I look back at where Molecular Melts started in 2022 compared with where it is today, I can see how much those small, consistent steps have added up.

The challenges have actually helped shape the way I think about the business now. I approach Molecular Melts the same way I would approach an experiment: test an idea, observe what happens, learn from it, adjust the formula, and try again. Not every experiment works the first time—and I have learned that is okay

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Molecular Melts Creative Scent Lab Co. was founded in 2022 in Washington, D.C., by a Black woman in science and proud fempreneur with the goal of using science to relax.

What really sets Molecular Melts apart is our approach to fragrance. I think of each scent almost like its own formula. Rather than simply choosing a fragrance and giving it a name, I love experimenting with unexpected combinations, developing a personality around each scent, and creating a visual world that helps tell its story. Our collection ranges from gourmand and nostalgic fragrances to floral, fresh, earthy, clean, and tropical blends, so there is a formula for different moods and personalities.

The science-inspired identity is woven throughout the brand. Even the name Molecular Melts plays on the idea that scent itself is chemistry. I want someone to be able to see one of our products or pieces of content and feel like they are discovering something rather than simply being sold a candle.

I’m especially proud that Molecular Melts has developed an identity that genuinely reflects who I am. As a Black woman with a science background, I’ve been able to create a space where science doesn’t have to feel clinical or intimidating—it can be creative, sensory, beautiful, relaxing, and even playful. I think that perspective is one of the things that makes the brand special.

Beyond our products, I’m also expanding Molecular Melts into creative scent experiences. I’m developing candle-making and fragrance-blending workshops where guests can step into the role of a “scent scientist,” explore different fragrance notes, formulate their own custom blend, and pour their own candle. I also want to collaborate with other creatives throughout the DMV and beyond to develop experiences that pair fragrance with activities such as painting, jewelry or charm-making, and other hands-on concepts.

Ultimately, I want people to know that Molecular Melts is becoming more than a candle company. It is a creative scent lab where fragrance, science, self-care, and creativity meet. Whether someone discovers us through a candle in their home, a wax melt, a car diffuser, a local pop-up, shopping online, through community, friend or family, or eventually one of our scent experiences, I want them to leave feeling like they experienced something uniquely Molecular Melts.

I’m most proud that something that began as an experiment of my own has grown into a brand that encourages other people to experiment, create, and find their own formula for relaxation.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
There are so many ways people can support and collaborate with Molecular Melts, and one of the things I’m most excited about in this next chapter is building more connections outside of and within the DMV creative and small business community.

The simplest way to support us is to shop small. Whether that’s purchasing a candle, wax melt, or car diffuser, stopping by our table at a local market, shopping online, sharing one of our posts, recommending us to a friend, or leaving a review, those actions genuinely make a difference for a growing small business.

I’m also very open to creative collaborations and partnerships. I would love to work with local artists, makers, businesses, venues, content creators, and other entrepreneurs on experiences and products that bring our communities together. As I expand Molecular Melts into candle-making and fragrance-blending workshops, I’m especially interested in collaborating on experiences such as Sip, Paint & Pour events, candles and charm or jewelry-making, floral and fragrance workshops, and other concepts where we can combine our different creative specialties into something unique.

Molecular Melts is also available for store front opportunities, pop-ups, markets, private events, corporate and team-building experiences, birthdays, bridal events, girls’ nights, and other celebrations. I’m excited about creating opportunities where people are not just purchasing a finished product—they can interact with fragrance, experiment, and create something of their own.

Support does not always have to involve making a purchase. Some of the most meaningful support for a small business can be as simple as sharing our work, telling someone about the brand, inviting us into a new space, or making an introduction that leads to an opportunity.

Ultimately, I want Molecular Melts to continue growing through community, creativity, and collaboration. If you have an idea that involves fragrance, creativity, or creating a memorable experience together, I’m always open to seeing what we can formulate
