Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Grolleman-Meussen.
Hi Nathalie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Originally from the Netherlands, our Dutch family moved to the USA in 2016 after living in the Republic of Georgia and Tanzania. My background as a former intensive care nurse fueled my passion for maternal care and led me to train and become certified as a birth and postpartum doula. What started as a solo passion grew rapidly through client referrals. In 2022, I launched a boutique doula agency that has grown to a team of over 30 certified doulas. We work in the wider DMV area, with coverage extending from Frederick and Annapolis in Maryland down to Alexandria, Northern Virginia, and everything in between.
We pride ourselves on our diverse backgrounds and strict vetting standards—including full certifications, background checks, and liability insurance. With support from my administrative team, Mikayla and Becky, we bring confident, safe, and compassionate care to new parents.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but every challenge has been an opportunity to grow and learn. The biggest challenge was when our agency grew rapidly, and I was the only one handling all the administration and coordination. At times, the workload felt overwhelming, but those experiences taught me a lot about managing a doula agency. I’m so grateful for the additional administrative help that I have now.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Doula Nathalie & Associates?
We specialize in birth and postpartum doula support, childbirth classes, and newborn care & basic breastfeeding classes.
What sets us apart, I would say, are two things: the relationships we build with our doulas and the balance we strike between size and personalization.
While our doulas are independent contractors, we build a doula community through regular meetings where we share experiences, stay up to date on the latest developments in the doula profession, and also take time to get together once in a while just to have a drink and kind of celebrate the work we get to do.
For our clients, we aim to balance size with personalization. Because of our size, we have doulas with a wide range of expertise (for example, related to VBAC or spinning babies), which allows us to provide tailored support to our clients’ needs. Our size also allows us to provide backup support when needed or accommodate changes in a client’s plans. As with building our doula community, we also aim to provide personalized doula support, and clients can always reach out to me directly if they have specific questions. In that sense, we definitely are not a bureaucratic organization where it is difficult to reach a real person by phone.
What I’m most proud of is seeing this approach work well for our doulas and clients, resulting in very positive client reviews for all the doulas on the team.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Living in Tanzania for four years gave me the chance to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. I had never done anything like it before, but the local guides coached me through every single step. That is exactly how we want to walk with you on your birthing journey. No matter how your story unfolds—even if it includes a C-section—you will be fully heard, seen, validated, and held. Having that unwavering support changes absolutely everything.
