Community Highlights: Meet Melanie Ulbricht of Fantasy Elite Athletics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Ulbricht.

Hi Melanie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started All Star Cheerleading at age 14. After trying many different sports and activities as a child, nothing really clicked as truly my “thing” I liked a little bit of everything until I began Competitive Cheer. I was instantly hooked.

I Cheered all through High School and as a Senior at age 18, I had a wacky idea to start an All Star Cheerleading Team of my own back in Salisbury called Level Up All Stars, I think if you go on Instagram you might still be able to find it. I drove to what was then called All Star Legacy in Ashburn, VA (Now Stingrays VA) and walked in and got certified to Coach at the ripe age of 18 and the rest was history. I had a small team in my small town all through college with varying numbers of participants. During Covid we were no longer able to practice so I was unable to have a team at that time. I focused on my online classes and trying to prepare myself for my “real job” that I would get after college. When I graduated, I moved to Boonsboro, MD and while applying to Grad Schools I picked up some Coaching Jobs on the side. I never really pursued Grad School as much as I had initially thought I would, Coaching “on this side of the bridge” was everything I had hoped for growing up on the shore. It was busy, fast paced and exciting. After living here for less than 6 months, I was asked to start a small team. What started as 5 athletes out of a gymnastics gym has grown to a program that serves hundreds of kids each year in our own facility with roughly 7 teams each year.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh there have definitely been some struggles along the way. Everything from learning to properly set my pricing so that I’m not at a deficit, to learning how to balance motherhood and owning a business while also not neglecting myself—I think the best way to summarize any struggle I’ve experienced so far is that I had a lot to learn. I still learn new things everyday and how to do this better.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fantasy Elite Athletics is a Competition Cheerleading & Dance Organization that also offers Recreational Tumbling, Gymnastics and other Class & Clinic based programs, events and activities.

We specialize and are known for our Full Year Competition Cheer Teams. What sets us apart from the others is every class, team, clinic or program is designed with a pathway in mind to get athletes to the next level. No athlete enters our program with the plan for us to keep them as a beginner athlete permanently. There is always a guide of how we’re going to get each kid to the next level, to where they want to go from where they are now.

I am most proud brand wise of our welcoming and family friendly atmosphere. Once you’re a member of Fantasy Elite, you’re always welcome. We have kids who come back as adults just to visit. It’s a part of you, always.

I want readers to know that we have something for everyone from adult fitness to mommy & me classes and that we want to be a space where all members of your family can find an athletic outlet for them with a community of people to be apart of it with them.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
The first team I ever helped to coach was a special needs cheer team called Shooting Stars.
