Life & Work with Srinivas Polisetty of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Srinivas Polisetty.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in education started over 20 years ago during my undergraduate studies and continued through earning my Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Nebraska in 2009. After years in academic research and university-level instruction, I recognized an urgent need for clear, high-level guidance for middle and high school students facing demanding STEM tracks.

I founded Urbana Math & Physics Tutoring to be a one-stop academic sanctuary for students tackling everything from Algebra and AP Precalculus to AP Physics C and the Digital SAT. Instead of families hiring multiple tutors, I wanted to provide comprehensive, flexible mentorship tailored to each student’s weekly challenges.

My teaching philosophy is centered entirely on the student: when concepts are explained with clarity and enthusiasm, confidence naturally follows. By working closely with school curriculums and teachers, I have helped students turn struggling grades around and guided dozens to top scores, including 800/800 on SAT Math. Today, with over 200 five-star reviews and hundreds of students mentored, my mission remains the same: demystifying math and physics and inspiring a genuine, lifelong love for learning.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all—teaching high-level math and physics comes with real hurdles, and the journey has been an ongoing learning process.

The first challenge was translating complex, abstract concepts into relatable, intuitive ideas for middle and high schoolers. Having a Ph.D. in Physics means you understand the math deeply, but teaching it effectively means meeting students exactly where they are, dismantling their fear of getting answers wrong, and rebuilding their self-belief. Test anxiety is very real when it comes to math and physics, and overcoming that emotional barrier is often harder than teaching the formulas themselves.

The second challenge has been staying nimble. Whether it’s pivoting strategies for the Digital SAT, mastering new AP course frameworks, or coordinating directly with students’ classroom teachers to fix deep-rooted gaps, running a dedicated coaching practice requires continuous evolution.

Those challenges have been my greatest teachers. They reinforced the core principle of my practice: it’s never about the tutor showing what they know—it’s entirely about listening to the student, earning their trust, and making learning an engaging, empowering experience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I Do & Specialize In:

I provide dedicated math, physics, and test prep coaching for middle and high school students. My core specializations include honors and advanced tracks—Algebra through AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Physics (1, 2, and C Mechanics/E&M), IB curricula, and targeted Digital SAT/ACT Math prep.

What Sets Me Apart:

The All-in-One STEM Solution: With a Ph.D. in Physics and 20+ years of teaching experience, I eliminate the need for parents to juggle multiple tutors. Sessions adapt flexibly to whatever the student needs that week, whether it’s a tough physics lab, a calculus exam review, or SAT strategy.

Teacher Collaboration & Ongoing Support: I actively communicate with classroom teachers to target specific weaknesses and provide out-of-class messaging support so learning doesn’t stop when the session ends.

Concept Over Memorization: I focus on dismantling math anxiety by using visual models, interactive problem-solving, and building genuine intuition.

What I Am Most Proud Of:

I’m incredibly proud of maintaining over 200 perfect 5-star reviews and guiding dozens of students to top-percentile outcomes, including perfect 800 scores on the SAT Math. But above all, I take the most pride in turning students’ academic self-doubt into genuine confidence—taking learners who felt defeated by STEM and watching them walk into exams feeling prepared, capable, and excited to learn.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is helping students build genuine self-belief.
In subjects like advanced mathematics and physics, it is easy to measure success through numbers—test scores, letter grades, or AP results. While those milestones are important, what happens beneath the surface matters far more. Too often, bright students walk through my door carrying heavy anxiety. They hit a challenging topic in calculus or mechanics, receive a disappointing grade, and immediately conclude, ‘I’m just not a math/physics person.’ That self-doubt can quietly follow them for years.
My core mission is to dismantle that fear. When I sit down with a student, my goal isn’t just to help them finish their homework; it’s to help them experience that ‘lightbulb moment’ where a concept finally makes sense. When a student realizes that understanding requires patience and the right explanation—not an innate, unreachable talent—their entire posture changes. They stop being afraid of making mistakes and start tackling tough problems with curiosity and resilience.
Grades and test scores naturally follow when confidence leads the way. Seeing a student transform from feeling defeated to realizing they are capable of mastering the hardest STEM courses—that is the most meaningful part of my work, and it’s what drives everything I do.
