Today we’d like to introduce you to Janene Onyango.
Hi Janene, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Get Your Vision On: A Vision That Continues to Grow
Get Your Vision On LLC began in 2017 with a simple but powerful belief: a vision deserves to be written down, nurtured, and put into action.
Inspired by the scripture “Write the vision, and make it plain” and the book Imagine Big by Terri Savelle Foy, I began imagining what it would look like to build a business that encouraged people to see greater possibilities for their lives. I wanted to create something that would help others recognize their gifts, move through challenges, and take meaningful steps toward their goals.
The first expression of that vision was a T-shirt business. I had designs created with the intention of sharing messages of inspiration and empowerment. Those shirts were an early way of bringing the vision to life—giving people words they could wear, carry with them, and perhaps begin to believe about themselves.
As the business developed, so did my understanding of its purpose. Get Your Vision On evolved into a space for life coaching and women’s empowerment. The work became more personal: encouraging women to name their aspirations, recognize their strengths, and pursue possibilities that might have felt distant or out of reach.
Through each change, three founding values remained at the heart of the business: integrity, perseverance, and flexibility. Integrity meant showing up honestly and honoring the trust people placed in me. Perseverance meant continuing to work toward the vision when the path became difficult. Flexibility meant allowing the business to grow as I learned more about the people I wanted to serve and the needs I was equipped to meet.
That willingness to grow eventually brought the vision into closer alignment with my lifelong work as an educator.
Today, Get Your Vision On LLC is the umbrella company for GYVON Tutoring, whose name carries the same message: Get Your Vision ON. Through tutoring, educational consulting, and advocacy for exceptional children, that original vision continues to take shape.
My work is grounded in more than 17 years of elementary teaching experience, reading intervention, and a deep commitment to educational equity. My approach has also been shaped by educators who helped me understand the power of explicit, systematic, multisensory instruction. My aunt Barbara Bennett, an early influence in my life and education, and my experience co-teaching with Eileen Perlman, co-founder of the Preventing Academic Failure reading program, helped lay the foundation for the literacy work I continue today.
At GYVON Tutoring, I bring that foundation to students who need individualized support in reading, writing, and other areas of learning. Orton-Gillingham-informed, structured literacy instruction helps me respond thoughtfully to students with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Just as essential is the relationship we build along the way. Listening, earning trust, and helping a learner feel safe enough to try are central to the work.
I want students to experience the satisfaction of understanding something that once felt confusing. I want them to recognize their progress and develop the confidence to keep going. GYVON’s values of Joy, Belonging, Growth, and Integrity give daily expression to that commitment.
The vision also reaches beyond tutoring sessions. Through educational consulting, I support educators and learning communities in considering how instruction, relationships, and learning environments can better meet students’ needs. My commitment to healing-centered approaches reflects my belief that students’ emotional experiences and sense of belonging matter deeply to their education.
Advocacy for exceptional children is another essential part of this work. As an educator and the mother of a young adult with Down syndrome, I understand how personal it is to want your child to be seen, understood, and supported. I bring that perspective to helping families understand educational information, prepare questions, communicate their concerns, and advocate for services that reflect their children’s individual needs and strengths.
From inspirational T-shirts to women’s empowerment, and now to tutoring, consulting, and advocacy, Get Your Vision On has continued to grow around a consistent purpose: helping people recognize possibility and move toward it with support.
The vision I wrote down in 2017 is still unfolding. Today, it lives in the student gaining confidence, the parent finding their voice, and the educator discovering another way to reach a child.
Get Your Vision On means seeing what is possible—and doing the work, together, to help it become real.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t been smooth. Some of the struggles along the way were overcoming the fear of success. That sounds ironic, but as I built my business, I also built my confidence.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to anyone just starting is, “Write the Vision and Make it Plain”; that means having a well-thought-out, written business plan before you start. I wish I had known that being an entrepreneur was an option. I grew up believing that being an employee and having a job (Just Over Broke) was the only way to achieve my goals and dreams. I hope my story helps others realize their dreams and know that anything is possible.
