Conversations with Mariah Foster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Foster.

Hi Mariah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in fashion started with a genuine love for creating. I went to college for Fashion Design, and over the years, that passion grew into something much bigger than simply making clothes. I’ve designed custom pieces, worked with clients for special occasions, I’m the designer behind Pragmatic Label Designs, where I specialize in custom designs, particularly statement pieces and custom prom gowns. I’ve been fortunate to build an audience that follows my work and trusts my creativity, and seeing my designs come to life on my clients has reminded me why I started .

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In 2021 opened a brick-and-mortar business, experienced setbacks, closed that business, and ultimately found my way back to the part of fashion I love most and that is creating. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that entrepreneurship is rarely a straight line. I’ve had ideas that worked, ideas that didn’t, and moments when balancing a full-time job, motherhood, and building a business made it difficult to give my creativity the attention I wanted to give it. But every experience taught me something about business, my strengths, and the type of career I ultimately want for myself. I’m still building, learning, and evolving, but I think that’s one of the most important parts of my story. I’ve learned that success doesn’t always mean getting everything right the first time. Sometimes it means being willing to start again with more experience, a clearer vision, and a better understanding of who you are and what you want to build.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a fashion designer and the owner of Pragmatic Label Designs, specializing in custom garments with a strong focus on prom and special-occasion wear. My work is known for being bold, feminine, and statement-making. I love working with corsetry, unique fabrics, embellishments, dramatic silhouettes, and details that make a garment feel truly custom rather than something you could simply find in a store.

What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients give me with some of their biggest moments. Many clients come to me with an inspiration photo or simply an idea, and I’m able to take that vision and turn it into something specifically designed for them. I especially love seeing the transformation from our initial consultation and sketch to the final fitting.

What sets me apart is that I’m not afraid of a challenge. I’ve always been drawn to designs that are different, dramatic, and sometimes unconventional. I don’t want every client to leave looking like the last one I want each piece to have its own identity while still having that signature attention to detail people recognize in my work. As I continue growing, I’m also expanding my presence within the fashion industry beyond designing, including developing Foster Fashion Group, a fashion-focused recruiting agency connecting skilled sewing professionals with businesses that need their talent. Ultimately, I want my work to represent creativity, craftsmanship, and creating opportunities within fashion.

How do you think about happiness?
My children are what make me the happiest. Being their role model and knowing that they watch me, learn from me, and are inspired by what I do means everything to me. I have a 21-year-old who is currently in college studying business and is also an entrepreneur with his own business, 6Shots Photography. Seeing him build something of his own makes me incredibly proud.
One of the things that brings me the most happiness is being able to show all of my children that there isn’t just one path to success. I want them to know that they can create opportunities for themselves, pursue what they love, and build a life that allows them to take care of themselves. Knowing that my journey can inspire them to believe in themselves and go after what they want makes me happy and motivates me to keep going.
