Conversations with Meg Murray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Murray.

Hi Meg, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started playing music professionally in Annapolis in the 90s, playing my original material in a town that had a lot of cover bands at the time, who were incredible musicians. I was lucky enough to learn from the greats -people like Mike McHenry, Greg Phillips, Craig Carr, Leslie Aumiller, Kevin Brooks, and Eva Cassidy all heavily influenced me with their stage craft, musicianship, work ethic and I am grateful for their mentorship.

From there, I played in a lot of different projects, and I fronted and wrote songs for all my bands including Americana band August West with Steve Lowe, alt-rock band Hussy, and R&B band Non-Fiction with Bryan Ewald, Mark St. Pierre, Anthony Setola and John Thomakos.

Producer Timbaland found me through Annapolis based songwriter Bill Pettaway, and I entered into a production deal that took me to NYC to write for myself, and for Epic Records artists such as JLo and Brittany Spears.

After NY, I came back to Maryland and co-produced my solo album Ready with Todd Kruezburg, and I focused on raising my family and caring for my parents while doing cover gigs to exercise my musical muscle and keep me sane. I was a founding member of non-profit AMFM, Inc. Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians that raises money to help pay for lost wages for local musicians. We produce shows in partnership with Rams Head On Stage to raise money for AMFM where I served on the board as Secretary for 11 years.

Today, I have started to perform all of my original songs again, thanks to a recording I found recently of me performing solo acoustic as an opener for Marti Jones at Rams Head in Annapolis. Revisiting the songs I had written in their organic state helped reconnect me to songwriting, and I released Live at Rams Head On Stage in Nov of 2025.

I have become close to other women artists in the Annapolis area, and helped co-found Songbird Collective and Songbird Festival along with Laura Brino, Danah Denice and Jeanette Lynn.

We create opportunity for and amplify women and non-binary musicians, as well as offering resources for women and families in an effort to build community in the Annapolis area. It has been especially rewarding to meet, work with, mentor amd be inspired by these incredible and talented artists.

I continue to perform regularly with singer-songwriter Angie Miller, I sing with award winning Steely Dan Tribute Band Technicolor Motor Home and Cyphers Band – the latest project of former Blue Miracle front man Steve Cyphers.

I recently began a new Americana trio project with Laura Brino and Sarah Brino called Sisiwitch, and we will release an EP in early 2027. I am currently rehearsing my solo band for shows and festivals in 2027 and we will be recording in Baltimore and Annapolis this spring. I am very grateful to be able to play music with some of the very best!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In some ways, it has been very smooth road for me. I have been mentored and encouraged by a lot of very good musicians, and I learn something new and get better with every gig I play. And I have always had good work/gigs and I am grateful.

In other ways, it has been a struggle – I often like to take the road less travelled – out of interest and my curiosity. It has not always led me where I wanted to go, but my choices always took me where I needed to go, and I have no regrets.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am first and foremost a singer and a songwriter. Singing is my joy and my therapy. Folks seem to connect to my songs, and they do so even more today than when I first wrote them, which is cool.

I love all genres of music, and I love the magic a great band creates. I am most proud of my album “Ready”, it helped me define myself as a songwriter, artist and as a producer and hopefully helped show a path to other female artists.

What sets me apart from others is the amazing support I have received from the Annapolis music scene and audiences.

Also, I was lucky enough to be mentored by my friend, the late singer Eva Cassidy. Eva was very kind to me and encouraging of my songwriting and performing. I was asked to talk about Eva in the new award-winning film “The Essence of Eva” by Irish filmakers Alex Feig and Malcolm Willis. Eva made me want to be a better writer and a better musician and I am grateful for her friendship.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Singing on the fireplace with my sister to the Beatles and Michael Jackson. Always listening to records, the radio and reading liner notes obsessively.
