Rising Stars: Meet Kenneth Graves of DC & Surrounding Areas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Graves.

Hi Kenneth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for art began when I was about four years old, growing up in Maryland with my father. Whenever I visited my mother, I would sit beside her and watch her draw. I was fascinated by her passion for creating and the way she could bring something to life with nothing more than a pencil and paper. Eventually, she began teaching me how to sketch. Snoopy was the first character she ever taught me to draw, and from that moment, I was hooked. By kindergarten, art had become a daily part of our lives. My mother encouraged me to enter small art competitions, and we would often challenge each other to see who could outdraw the other. Of course, in my mind, I always won. More importantly, art became my escape. I was experiencing bullying at school, and my mother encouraged me to use creativity as a way to process what I was going through to turn difficult emotions into something I could create.

When I was around 11, my mother moved to Georgia. During one of my visits, she taught me how to draw my first actual person. I took what I had created, made prints, and distributed them to homes throughout the neighborhood. I wasn’t interested in asking for money. Instead, I asked people for advice and honest critiques. That advice stayed with me.

From that point forward, I began pursuing portraiture. I drew people from all walks of life celebrities, artists, musicians, and complete strangers and would often give my work away simply to receive feedback. I wanted to understand how people experienced my art and how I could continue to grow. In high school, my art teacher recognized that I had what he called a “good eye for art.” He trusted me enough to allow me to teach portions of his classes. It was one of the first times I realized that my natural ability could become something much bigger.

After graduation, however, I stepped away from art. I fell into a period of depression, and my vision became clouded. My creativity felt blocked, and the passion I had carried since childhood seemed to disappear. Then, in 2016, I decided to find my way back. I began painting. I watched countless YouTube tutorials, called my grandfather for lessons, and ultimately taught myself. For two years, I painted five to six hours a day, determined to accelerate my skills and master the craft.

That dedication eventually led to my first major showing with RAW Artists, where I sold every piece of artwork I brought. I was amazed and even more inspired when I was invited back. From there, everything began to expand. My social media presence grew, radio and phone interviews started coming in, artists reached out about collaborations, and I began receiving bookings for art shows. In 2019, I had the opportunity to work with Nike and Adidas, experiences I once never imagined possible. That same year, I sold my first painting to a celebrity.

Then 2020 arrived.

My career was gaining momentum, but circumstances surrounding the credibility of my work created controversy, and I eventually had to step away from painting. Just as my career was gaining momentum, controversy surrounding my work led me to step away from painting. That same year, I became a first-time father to my daughter, London, the love of my life. Fatherhood gave me a new purpose, and I focused on being there for her. Her love for art helped give me a push I needed. In 2023, my social media platforms were hacked, costing me years of work, connections, and momentum. Everything I had built seemed to disappear overnight. I had to start over. Completely.

In 2024, I met my girlfriend, Kerra. During a time when I was struggling to find my way again, she helped me emerge from that dark place and encouraged me to get back on course. I began painting again, and honestly, without her support, I don’t know if I would have continued. I was fortunate to rebuild what I had lost and, in 2025, partner with ArtBae. Since then, I have participated in countless events, expanded my creative reach, and watched my brand evolve in ways I once couldn’t have imagined.

Today, I feel incredibly blessed to create in the presence of corporations, organizations, fellow artists, collectors, and individuals who have all played a role in my evolution. Each experience has contributed to my growth not only as an artist, but as a businessman and creative professional. I now have a brand manager who helps oversee my business affairs, keeps me focused, and helps me continue building the vision behind my work. When I look back at the journey, from drawing Snoopy beside my mother as a four-year-old, to giving away portraits for critiques, to teaching art in high school, losing my passion, finding it again, building a career, starting over, and ultimately rebuilding, I realize that none of it was wasted.

Every chapter shaped the artist I am today. I am proud of my business. I am proud of my life. And I wouldn’t change the way any of it happened, because every setback, lesson, relationship, opportunity, and second chance brought me closer to where I am supposed to be.

This isn’t just the story of how I became an artist. It’s the story of how I found my way back to myself.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the obstacles I’ve faced have been learning to paint, finding a supportive community, and seeking guidance from other artists. There is a lot of gatekeeping in the art industry, which can make it difficult to find mentorship and opportunities.

Becoming a father has also brought new challenges. Balancing work, my business, and fatherhood as a new parent has required me to manage my time and priorities differently. Despite these challenges, I continue to learn, grow, and stay committed to my art and my journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a visual artist who transforms visions and real life experiences into art. I’m best known for my realistic portraits and striking black-and-white paintings. What I’m most proud of is my versatility and ability to adapt creatively to any situation. What sets my work apart is the emotion it evokes—my goal is for people to not only see my art, but to feel something when they experience it. My technique, perspective, and artistic style are uniquely my own.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is more than just selling my art it’s knowing that something I created can move people, inspire them, and connect with them on a deeper level. I want my work to reach people from all walks of life who can see themselves, their stories, or their emotions in what I create. When someone genuinely connects with my art and feels something from it, that’s success to me.
