Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Jones.
Hi Dominic, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a young kid that grew up in Baltimore city running around Park Heights with my brothers and my cousins living on the west side of Baltimore, I found my love for art recreation center called c c Jackson. I used to go to on Park Heights. I’ve been an artist since then My mom always used to tell me I used to always draw every day she used to tell me thatI will always draw one of my favorite childhood, cartoon characters he-man but soon as I got older I found myself doing a lot of anime characters such as Dragon Ball Z so the love of art was always there but there was also struggle and trauma never forget the day leaving Baltimore city in 1999 no it wasn’t to get up and just move type of kind of thing it was me and my brother is being sent to false care lotta ups and downs one of my homes I lived at was in Baltimore County. I went to Deer Park middle magnet got into fights that it’s normal but I still had art I got suspended for drawing Dragon Ball Z characters for peoples I was selling them in school for $.50 lol so still through everything art was there even though There was up and downs these care homes but my art was my peace. I picked up a paint and haven’t looked back since then started my Mural business in 2010 Jones custom murals and portraits a lot of ups and downs, trying to get people to recognize who I am and what I do in and out of businesses trying to promote murals. I did my fair share of portraits which led me to doing more of my murals today I’ve been at it for 21 years now still going and it’s been amazing. Doing jobs for a companies like UPS Ace Hardware store, and for local businesses and towns and much more
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has not been a smooth road lotta challenges, lotta ups and downs a lot of well I can see him a little in terminating.I was always a big guy so I wasn’t your typical looking artist lol 6’5 African-American going around try to painting portraits and murals for people didn’t have a lot of support but my family wife and children but being a self taught artist teach teaching yourself how to paint professionally a lot of the challenges it was a challenge. I was willing to stay consistent at for 21 and learn and mold myself into a master artist
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Specialize in just about any form of art that’s what makes me unique. The main things I did focus on and specialize in is my portraits and my murals. I painted all styles and all different mediums from acrylic to oil you name it most proud of my murals that I do what sent to me a part from others is I’m very detailed oriented. I have a creative perspective style. I combine realism with more of a playful style of art with unique perspectives now I have ventured into talk to to compliment my work
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I really didn’t have a mentor. All I had was God guidanceI had a lot of people that I did work with that kind of stared me in the right direction, but other than that, I always was looking to learn and seek advice from artist that I followed through social media
