Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatmata John.
Hi Fatmata, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started with a genuine love for creativity, bringing ideas to life, and creating memorable experiences for others. What began as something I enjoyed doing naturally eventually grew into SASSY EVENTS, LLC. I officially started my business in 2020, and since then, I’ve continued to grow as an event decorator, balloon artist, and business owner.
In the beginning, I was learning everything as I went from creating designs and communicating with clients to managing vendors, inventory, setup, and all of the behind the scenes details that go into making an event come together. Over time, I became more confident in my creativity and developed my own style. I learned that event decorating is about more than making a space look beautiful; it is about listening to a client’s vision and creating an experience that feels personal and memorable to them.
Building SASSY EVENTS,LLC while also working and continuing my education has definitely required discipline, patience, and a lot of time management. There have been challenges along the way, but every event has taught me something new and helped me become better at what I do. I’ve had the opportunity to create everything from birthday celebrations and baby showers to larger events, and I love seeing a concept go from an idea or mockup to a completed space.
Today, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. What started as a creative passion has grown into a business that allows me to express my creativity and my love for celebrating people. I’m still growing, learning, and pushing myself creatively, but I’m excited about what’s ahead for SASSY EVENTS,LLC and how much more there is for me to accomplish.
If you want, I can also make it sound a little more personal and less polished so it feels more like your natural voice.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Building a business comes with a lot of trial and error, especially when you’re learning how to balance creativity with the business side of things. Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced have been managing clients’ expectations, staying within budgets, dealing with last-minute changes, coordinating vendors, and learning how to properly price my work while still recognizing the value of my time and creativity.
There have also been times when I had to balance my business with school, work, and other responsibilities, which taught me a lot about discipline, time management, and perseverance. As my business has grown, I’ve had to learn that not every opportunity is the right opportunity and that setting boundaries is just as important as providing great customer service.
Every challenge has helped me become more confident as a business owner and more intentional about the way I operate. I’m still learning and growing, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and how each obstacle has helped shape both me and my business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner and lead event designer of SASSY EVENTS, LLC, where I specialize in creating custom event décor and memorable experiences for birthdays, baby showers, weddings, graduations, corporate events, and other special occasions. My work includes balloon décor, custom backdrops, themed event setups, signage, and full event styling. I really enjoy taking a client’s vision and bringing it to life in a way that feels personal, creative, and unique to them.
I would say I’m known for paying close attention to detail and making sure every element of an event works together. Whether it’s the colors, balloons, backdrop, custom graphics, or overall setup, I want everything to feel intentional and beautifully put together.
What I’m most proud of is how much I’ve been able to grow SASSY EVENTS,LLC while continuing to grow professionally in other areas of my life. Building a business takes a lot of patience, consistency, creativity, and problem solving, and I’m proud that I’ve continued to push myself and improve with every event.
What sets me apart is that I don’t believe in giving every client the same setup. I take the time to understand their vision, personality, and the feeling they want their event to have. I want people to walk into the room and immediately feel like the celebration was created specifically for them. For me, it’s more than just decorating a space it’s about creating an experience and memories that people will remember long after the event is over.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
believe risk taking is a necessary part of growth. To me, taking a risk does not always mean making a reckless decision; sometimes it means believing in yourself enough to step outside of what feels comfortable, even when you do not know exactly how things will turn out.
One of the biggest risks I have taken was starting SASSY EVENTS, LLC. Building a business requires you to put yourself, your creativity, your time, and your finances on the line. When I started, I did not have everything figured out. I had to learn as I went, trust my vision, build relationships with clients and vendors, invest in my craft, and continue improving with every event. There were definitely moments when I questioned myself, but taking that chance allowed me to discover how much I was capable of.
I have also taken risks professionally and academically by continuing my education while working and managing my business. Completing my master’s degree in Health Information Management and Technology while balancing my other responsibilities required a lot of sacrifice and discipline. I am now taking another risk by transitioning into a new area of my career and pursuing opportunities in health information technology, informatics, and clinical systems.
I would not describe myself as someone who takes risks without thinking. I like to understand what I am getting into, prepare as much as I can, and then take the leap. I have learned that waiting until you feel completely ready can sometimes keep you from opportunities that are meant to help you grow. Some of the best things I have accomplished started with me deciding to take a chance on myself.
