Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Grier.
Hi cheryl, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the invitation business actually started with a little curiosity. I was working for a teachers union in Virginia and stopped by a printer that we occasionally used. While I was there, I noticed these large albums with the words Carlson Craft on the front. Being curious, I started looking through them and became interested in what I saw.
I got some information, gave Carlson Craft a call and thought, “I could do this.” I completed the paperwork to become a dealer, invested in their albums and marketing materials, and they created a website for me featuring products for weddings and other special occasions. That was the beginning of my business, originally known as A Perfect Invitation.
I started participating in bridal shows, where I had the opportunity to meet couples and their families and learn more about what they needed during the planning process. Over the years, the industry changed. The large, heavy invitation albums eventually gave way to more manageable sample materials, and my business continued to evolve as well.
In 2025, A Perfect Invitation became API Bespoke Branding and Planning. The new name reflects how the business has grown beyond simply providing invitations. Today, I enjoy helping couples navigate the details surrounding their wedding stationery while giving them the information and guidance they need to make confident decisions.
Bridal shows remain one of my favorite parts of the business because I genuinely enjoy meeting couples and their families, hearing about their plans and answering their questions. What started with me being curious enough to open an album at a printer has grown into a business that I still enjoy year after year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, one of my early challenges was having the financial resources to fund orders and continue investing in the business. Staying current also requires an ongoing investment in new invitation samples and materials so that I can offer couples fresh options while keeping up with changing styles and trends.
The industry itself has changed quite a bit over the years. Couples now have more options than ever, including the ability to create and order their own invitations online. Another challenge has been reaching couples who may initially look to larger, more recognizable companies without realizing that there are small businesses like mine that can offer personal service, professional guidance and quality products. I’ve even had couples tell me later that they wished they had known about my business sooner.
One thing I have learned is that part of my role is helping couples understand the value behind professional service and quality. Your wedding invitation is a reflection of your style, and it sets the tone for what your guests can expect from your celebration. Quality and professionalism come at a price, but so does the experience of having someone available to guide you, answer questions and help you make informed decisions.
Those challenges have pushed me to stay current, continue learning and find better ways to communicate what makes API Bespoke Branding and Planning different. The industry may continue to change, but providing couples with quality, personal service and guidance remains at the heart of what I do.
We’ve been impressed with API Bespoke Branding and Planning, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
API Bespoke Branding and Planning specializes in wedding invitations and social stationery, but what I offer goes beyond simply helping couples choose an invitation. I believe your wedding invitation is the first introduction your guests receive to your celebration. It reflects your style, gives them a glimpse of what is to come and sets the tone for the wedding day.
What sets API Bespoke apart is the personal attention and guidance I provide throughout the process. Every couple is at a different stage of wedding planning, so I take the time to listen, ask questions and understand what they need. Sometimes that means helping them select the right invitation and coordinating pieces. Other times, it means answering questions about wording, etiquette, timelines or when certain items should be ordered and mailed.
Education is an important part of my approach. At bridal shows, I don’t want couples to simply stop at my table, pick up a brochure and walk away. I enjoy talking with them about where they are in the planning process and sharing information and resources that can help them make confident decisions. Even if a couple doesn’t become a client that day, I want them to leave our conversation knowing something they didn’t know before.
I’m especially proud that API Bespoke has remained personal. Couples have so many ways to purchase wedding stationery today, but I believe there is still tremendous value in being able to work with someone who will listen to you, answer your questions and guide you through the details. I want my clients to feel comfortable asking questions and confident that the stationery they select truly represents them.
The products are important, and quality will always matter to me, but the relationship matters too. API Bespoke Branding and Planning is about combining beautiful, quality stationery with personal service, education and guidance so couples don’t feel as though they have to figure everything out on their own.
Ultimately, I want couples to remember how they felt working with me: informed, comfortable, confident and excited about what they are creating for their celebration.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area is its diversity. There are so many different cultures, communities, traditions and experiences represented throughout the region. From a wedding perspective, I love seeing how couples bring their own personalities, backgrounds and traditions into their celebrations. There is always something new to experience, and no two weddings have to look or feel the same.
What I like least would probably be the traffic! There are so many wonderful places throughout the DMV, but sometimes getting from one side of the area to the other can be an adventure all by itself. Still, having access to everything this region offers makes it worth navigating.
