Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story began in Guatemala, where radio has always been a very important part of my life. I grew up surrounded by radio and was inspired by my father, César Augusto Hernández Salguero, a well-known Guatemalan radio personality, and my uncle Rafael Hernández, better known as the beloved comedian “Velorio Chapín.” As a child, I spent time at TGW, Guatemala’s national radio station, and those early experiences left a lasting impression on me.
I studied Communications at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, where I earned a degree in Broadcasting as well as my professional broadcaster certification. I began my career working at Radio Universidad and Radio Emperador, and later joined Radio Grupo Alius and Ke Buena 93.7FM, where I eventually became Program Director. Radio taught me not only how to communicate, but also how to connect with people, tell stories, and create a voice that audiences could relate to.
In 2004, I moved to the United States, first settling in Houston, Texas. Starting over in a new country was challenging, especially because opportunities in Spanish-language radio were often centered around a Mexican audience, and I did not have a Mexican accent. I had to knock on many doors before one finally opened.
That opportunity came when I moved to the Washington, DC area in 2006. I joined Mega Communications at Mega Clásica 92.7 FM and 94.3 FM as an on-air personality, and within a few months I was allowed to become Program Director. In 2009, I joined Radio La Nueva 87.7 FM, where I continued growing professionally and became the first female host of an afternoon show, “Zona VIP.”
After many years in radio, I realized that my voice and communication skills could take me beyond traditional broadcasting. I began exploring digital media and content creation, and what started as a new chapter eventually became a full-time career.
Today, I am a content creator, influencer, brand ambassador, and entrepreneur. Through my company, Somos 4 Media, I create bilingual content focused on lifestyle, technology, family, and everyday experiences. I have had the opportunity to partner with national and international brands and use my platforms to connect with a growing audience, particularly within the Hispanic community.
Looking back, I realize that every chapter of my career prepared me for the next one. Radio gave me my voice, moving to the United States taught me resilience, and digital media gave me the freedom to build something of my own. Today, I’m grateful to be able to combine everything I have learned throughout the years to create content that informs, inspires, and connects with people.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges I faced when I began my career in the United States was learning to navigate the cultural diversity of the Washington, DC area.
The DC region is home to people from many different Latin American countries, and each culture has its own expressions, accents, humor, and ways of communicating. As someone who grew up in Guatemala, I quickly learned that words or expressions that are completely normal and familiar to me could mean something very different—or even be perceived as offensive—to someone from another country.
That taught me to become much more intentional and thoughtful about the way I communicate. I had to learn how to adapt without losing my identity or the authenticity of my voice.
That lesson continues to be very important to me today as a content creator. Every time I create a video or share a message with my audience, I’m mindful that I’m speaking to a very diverse Hispanic community. I want people from different backgrounds to feel included, respected, and represented. It has challenged me to become a better communicator and has ultimately made me more thoughtful about the content I create.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Today, I am a content creator, influencer, brand ambassador, and entrepreneur. Through my company, Somos 4 Media, I create bilingual content focused on lifestyle, technology, family, travel, beauty, fashion, and everyday experiences.
My years in radio gave me a strong foundation in storytelling, communication, voiceovers, hosting, and connecting with an audience. When I transitioned into social media, my goal was not simply to create content, but to earn my audience’s trust and become a trusted voice for the Latino community where I live. I’m proud to say that I have accomplished that.
What sets me apart is the combination of my media experience, authenticity, and understanding of multicultural audiences. I’m very intentional about the content I create and the brands I partner with because I know that my audience trusts my recommendations. For me, success is not just about numbers; it’s about creating meaningful connections and making people feel seen, informed, and represented.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I believe no one builds a career alone, and I am deeply grateful to all the people who were part of my professional journey, especially those who helped shape me in Guatemala.
My father, César Augusto Hernández, deserves a very special place in that story. He was the person who made me fall in love with radio. As a child, simply watching him work taught me more than he probably realized. From him, I learned not only how to communicate and use my voice, but also something even more important: that our work should be about serving and connecting with others.
I am also grateful to the colleagues, mentors, and professionals I encountered throughout my years in radio in Guatemala. Everything I learned there became a foundation for my career in the United States. When I started over in a new country, I carried those lessons, experiences, and values with me.
Today, I am equally grateful for the people who have supported me throughout my journey in digital media: my family, my audience, my brand partners, PR and Marketing agencies, and the many people who have believed in my work. Each of them has played a role in helping me become the communicator and entrepreneur I am today.
