Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Goycochea.
Carla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey in the beauty industry began more than 20 years ago. What started as a genuine love for beauty gradually became a career, and eventually, something much bigger than I ever imagined.
Over the years, I explored different areas of the industry, from front-desk concierge, salon and spa management, makeup artistry, and eyelash extensions to permanent makeup. In 2016, I entered the permanent makeup world, and that became a major turning point in my career. I completely fell in love with the combination of artistry, precision, and the ability to make such a meaningful difference in someone’s confidence.
But I have always believed that if I am going to do something, I want to understand it at the highest level possible. I invested heavily in my education, traveled for advanced trainings, earned multiple certifications, and continued refining my skills. Eventually, that passion for learning evolved into a passion for teaching.
I began educating other artists in 2018, and that changed the direction of my career once again. I realized that as much as I loved performing services, there was something incredibly rewarding about helping another person develop a skill that could completely change the trajectory of their life. Teaching allowed me to take everything I had learned—not only about technique, but also about professionalism, customer service, business, and the realities of entrepreneurship—and pass it on to someone else.
That ultimately led me to create Masterpiece Beauty Academy in Rockville, Maryland. Today, I specialize in permanent makeup artistry and education, offering advanced services and professional training in techniques such as Microblading, Powder Brows, Nano Brows, Lip Tattoo, and more.
My journey has also expanded beyond the academy. I became a co-founder of Paragon Studios, a professional space created for independent beauty and wellness entrepreneurs to operate and grow their own businesses.
Getting to where I am today was definitely not an overnight success story. It has taken years of education, reinvention, long days, calculated risks, mistakes, resilience, and a willingness to keep evolving. Entrepreneurship has taught me that talent is important, but discipline, integrity, consistency, and the ability to adapt are what truly build longevity.
At this stage of my career, my purpose goes far beyond creating beautiful results. I want to help elevate the permanent makeup industry through better education and higher professional standards, while showing other aspiring entrepreneurs—especially women—that it is possible to build a career and a business on their own terms.
And I still feel like I am just getting started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road—and I don’t think any meaningful entrepreneurial journey truly is.
One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to navigate the business side of an industry that I originally entered because I loved the artistry. Being talented at your craft and knowing how to run a successful business are two completely different things. I had to learn about marketing, finances, customer service, leadership, contracts, managing people, making difficult decisions, and sometimes simply trusting my own judgment.
There have also been many moments of uncertainty. I have invested a significant amount of time and money into my education and my businesses without always knowing exactly what the return would be. I have had ideas that worked beautifully and others that didn’t. I have trusted the wrong people, made mistakes, experienced disappointments, and had moments when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions.
Another challenge has been learning that growth sometimes requires you to walk away from things that once served you. As I evolved professionally, there were affiliations, business relationships, and even versions of myself that I eventually outgrew. Those transitions are not always easy, especially when you have invested years into something, but I learned that staying somewhere simply because it is familiar can sometimes prevent you from reaching the next level.
And, of course, I have built all of this while being a single mother. Balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship, continuing education, financial responsibilities, and the demands of building businesses has probably been one of the greatest challenges—and greatest motivators—of my journey. There were many times when slowing down simply wasn’t an option because I wasn’t building a future only for myself. I was building one for my daughter as well. Learning how to be present as a mother while still allowing myself to be ambitious as a woman required sacrifice, discipline, and a lot of resilience.
There have been very long days and periods when I had to wear every hat in the business. And as a woman building businesses and pursuing bigger goals, I have learned that you cannot wait for everyone around you to understand your vision before you pursue it.
But I am genuinely grateful for the difficult parts of the journey. They made me more strategic, more selective, more resilient, and much more confident in my ability to figure things out.
I no longer measure success by whether everything goes according to plan. I measure it by my ability to adapt when it doesn’t, learn from the experience, and keep moving forward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work today is centered around two things I am deeply passionate about: permanent makeup artistry and education.
As a permanent makeup artist, I specialize in advanced eyebrow and lip techniques, including Microblading, Powderbrows, Nanobrows, and Lip Tattoo, among other procedures. My work is known for being extremely meticulous, polished, and natural-looking. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my craft, and I pay close attention to every detail—from facial anatomy and symmetry to color selection, technique, and how the work will heal over time.
I take great pride in producing impeccable work. For me, permanent makeup should never feel rushed or standardized. Every client has different features, skin, coloring, lifestyle, and expectations, so every procedure should be approached individually. I am very intentional about creating results that complement the person rather than simply following a trend.
Education, however, has become an equally important part of who I am professionally. Through Masterpiece Beauty Academy, I train aspiring and established permanent makeup artists in both foundational and advanced techniques. My goal is not simply to teach students how to perform a procedure. I want them to understand why they are doing what they are doing—the anatomy, theory, safety, technique, decision-making, professionalism, and business principles behind the work.
I think one of the things that sets me apart is that my standards are extremely high, both for myself and for my students. I believe technical excellence and professionalism have to coexist. Beautiful work means very little if it is not performed safely, ethically, and with a genuine understanding of the responsibility we have when someone trusts us with their face.
I am also very honest with my students about entrepreneurship. I teach from more than 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, not only as an artist, but through years of working in customer service, management, education, and business ownership. I want my students to leave with more than a certificate. I want them to understand how to build a reputation, communicate professionally, serve their clients well, and ultimately create a sustainable career.
What I am most proud of is the reputation I have built around the quality of my work and education. Knowing that someone chooses me because they trust my standards means a great deal to me. And when a former student goes on to build a successful career of their own, that is an entirely different kind of accomplishment.
Ultimately, what sets me apart is probably very simple: I care deeply about doing things well. Whether I am working on a client’s face, teaching a student, developing a curriculum, or building a business, I am meticulous about the details. I don’t believe in cutting corners, and I don’t believe excellence happens accidentally. It comes from education, discipline, integrity, and consistently holding yourself to a higher standard.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the beauty and permanent makeup industries evolving tremendously over the next five to ten years. Clients are becoming much more educated and selective, which I believe is a very positive thing. They are looking beyond trends and social media and paying closer attention to an artist’s education, experience, safety standards, healed results, and overall professionalism.
In permanent makeup specifically, I think we will continue moving toward more sophisticated, natural-looking techniques. The industry has already changed dramatically since I entered it, and advances in machines, needles, pigments, technology, and education will continue to give artists the ability to create increasingly refined and customized results.
I also believe the standards for becoming a permanent makeup artist need to become higher. As the industry grows, education cannot simply be about learning a technique in a few days and receiving a certificate. Artists are working on people’s faces and permanently implanting pigment into the skin. That comes with an enormous responsibility. I hope the future brings stronger education, greater accountability, better regulation, and a much greater emphasis on safety and professionalism.
Another major shift I see is the continued merging of beauty, aesthetics, and wellness. People are no longer looking at beauty as one isolated service. They are becoming more interested in comprehensive experiences where appearance, self-care, confidence, and wellness exist together.
That is actually very aligned with my own plans for the future. One of my long-term goals is to open a larger beauty and wellness center that brings multiple professionals and specialties together under one roof. I envision creating an elevated environment where clients can access a variety of beauty, aesthetic, and wellness services while also creating opportunities for talented professionals to build successful careers and businesses of their own.
Education will remain a major part of that vision as well. I plan to continue expanding Masterpiece Beauty Academy by introducing additional techniques and areas of study and eventually bringing more highly qualified educators onto the academy’s team. I don’t want the academy’s growth to be limited by how many students I can personally teach. I want to build an educational institution with exceptional standards that can continue growing beyond me while maintaining the quality, integrity, and attention to detail that I have worked so hard to establish.
Ultimately, I believe the next decade will favor professionals who are willing to continuously educate themselves, embrace innovation without sacrificing fundamentals, and hold themselves to increasingly higher standards. There will always be new techniques and trends, but excellence, safety, integrity, and genuine expertise will never go out of style.
That is the direction I see the industry moving in—and it is exactly the direction in which I intend to continue growing.
