Life & Work with Teyana Wright of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teyana Wright.

Hi Teyana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Pennsylvanian, small town, east coast girl. The middle child of 5 children AND the only girl of all brothers. I always knew I was destined for greatness but didn’t know how I was going to get there. In 2015 I ventured off to California at just 19 and that’s when I discovered my true love and passion for all things beauty. I became a freelance MUA doing side-gigs in LA and working for a e-commerce cosmetics line named “Aida Cosmetics”.

End of summer 2016, When things got a bit rocky for me in Los Angeles I decided to head back to the east coast where I was closer to home so I could rebuild my life. I ended up here in Maryland where I had a couple close friends from high school that helped me get back on my feet. Within a year I found a good paying job but it came at a cost of true burnout. I was falling apart a bit because I missed doing what I love which was makeup. I would use my social media to keep the momentum and do makeup tutorials and videos but it wasn’t enough.

One night my best friend shared a Craigslist job ad for a “beauty class assistant” I had no idea what the “beauty class” was but I said what the heck and I sent my resume to the email listed. 2 weeks later I get a call from the ad lister asking to meet for an interview. I was super nervous because you know…. The Craigslist killer was a real thing! (Dark-humor has carried me through my entire life.)

We ended up meeting at a public place. I was relieved to see the person behind the Craigslist ad was a real person and in fact we were the same height! A whopping 5’2. She began to share that the class was a Microblading class in which I have never heard or seen anything about this procedure or technique she explained the class and was seeking for an assistant. Not knowing much I took the opportunity with a start date only a couple weeks away.

After doing my own research I found that Microbalding is permanent cosmetic tattooing procedure done with a needle and ink to design simulated hair follicles of the brows in replace of real missing or sparse hair that can be caused by autoimmune disease like alopecia, or chemotherapy treatments that causes hair loss. I was immediately excited to see how it all was done.

The classes at my new opportunity were a success but I still kept my full-time job. So had no days off but I was getting my spark back being apart of something beauty related and being apart of something so life-changing for so many.

Being apart of those Micro-blading training classes I really saw the need and purpose for the art of cosmetic tattooing. After 3 months of assisting I was approached with the idea of learning and performing the procedure as an artist. I jumped at the opportunity and I got busy studying and practicing. 6 months of practicing and working on models, I was able to pick up the technique and once I opened my books to the public I became booked out 6 months in advance, which allowed me to leave my full-time job that was burning me out.

For the next 5 1/2 years I worked long hours perfecting my craft and became an actual senior trainer. I became a 5-star receiving artist here in the DMV. And got to train hundreds maybe even thousands of Microblading artist who are actually some of the best right here in the DMV.

2022 after starting a family, becoming and engaged to my now husband and also experiencing a close family member; I decided it was time to take the leap and start my own legacy which is how Lapri Beauty was born. The name Lapri is literally my middle name. It’s a piece of me that I have always identified with. It tells a story, of a young shy girl who always knew the world was hers but never knew how much it really was, hers…. I’ve had the burning desire my whole life to create something that could touch many lives in a positive way.

Using my talents and the art of Permanent makeup, I have built and retained some of the best relationships with my clients who have been with me from the very beginning of my journey.

Lapri Beauty was created to help many people who struggle with their mental health or appearances and/or lack of confidence. It is restoration beauty care that gives many their time back in their busy schedules, those who don’t have much time for a daily beauty routine.

Each client that walks out my doors I make it my mission to empower them even if it’s creating them brows that frame their face or lip neutralizing that allows them to see theirselves in a different and brighter light. We also offer smaller services to accommodate bi-weekly beauty maintenance such as lash extensions and brow grooming services like brow laminations and brow tinting.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not always smooth and I do experience entrepreneurial-blues but when I see the smiles on my clients faces and hearing how proud my family is of me, it makes it’s all worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional PMU artist and trainer. I create natural and life like results, my warm personalities leaves lasting impressions on clients. In 2022 I competed in the WULOP PMU competition against 100’s of global artist and although I didn’t win my model was pulled for the top 5 final vote. I’m very proud of that moment.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I worked briefly for a reality tv celebrity and I met thee RIHANNA back stage at her concert. She said I was cutest ever and that she’ll steal me away. Lol!
