Hi Rhonda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey with Silky & Radiant Skin began from a very personal place. As a mother and grandmother, caring for my family has always been important to me, and that same care extends to the products I create. For years, I struggled with sensitive skin and found it difficult to find body care products that were both effective and made with ingredients I felt good about using. Many products on the market contained unnecessary additives or left my skin feeling irritated instead of nourished.
I decided to take matters into my own hands and began researching natural ingredients, cosmetic formulation, and the science behind healthy skin. What started as making products for myself and my family quickly grew into something much bigger as others began experiencing the difference my body butters and scrubs made and encouraging me to turn my passion into a business.
Today, Silky & Radiant Skin is a luxury handcrafted body care company specializing in small-batch whipped body butters and exfoliating body scrubs that help people achieve soft, healthy, radiant skin while turning everyday self-care into a luxurious experience. Every product is handcrafted with attention to detail using high-quality ingredients because I believe everyone deserves products that feel indulgent without compromising quality.
As a woman-owned, Black-owned, veteran-owned business, I’m incredibly grateful for how far we’ve come. Along the way I’ve been blessed to participate in pop-up markets throughout Maryland and the DMV, collaborate with national brands, and build relationships with amazing customers who continue to support my dream. While I still work full-time in federal service, every milestone reminds me that with consistency, faith, and hard work, dreams really can become reality.
My hope is that Silky & Radiant Skin is remembered as more than a skincare brand. I want it to be a brand that helps people slow down, care for themselves intentionally, and enjoy a little everyday luxury—because everyone deserves to feel confident, cared for, moisturized, and unbothered.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most small business owners, my journey has definitely had its challenges.
Building a business while maintaining a full-time federal career means many late nights, early mornings, and weekends dedicated to creating products, preparing for pop-up events, managing inventory, and continuing to learn everything I can about the skincare industry.
One of my biggest challenges came this year when I underwent back surgery. For someone who personally handcrafts every product, being temporarily unable to lift, mix, or prepare inventory was incredibly difficult. It forced me to slow down and trust the process. Thankfully, I had planned ahead, kept my online store open, and was able to continue serving customers while I recovered.
Another challenge has been learning all the areas of running a business that most people never see. Despite the obstacles, every challenge has made me stronger, more resilient, and more committed to building a brand customers can trust.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve learned that growth requires stepping outside your comfort zone. Starting a business while working full-time was a risk. Investing in inventory, participating in larger pop-up events, applying for grants, pursuing collaborations with national brands, and introducing new products all involved uncertainty. I believe calculated risks create opportunities, and entrepreneurship has taught me that confidence comes from taking action.
