Chelsea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Elegant Ensembles was never supposed to be a business. I actually became an event decorator completely by accident.
Growing up, my parents had a way of making birthdays feel special. They would create these beautiful birthday setups for me and my sisters, and as a child, I didn’t realize how much those moments were shaping me. I just knew how it felt to wake up or walk into a space and see that someone had taken the time to make an ordinary room feel special simply because they were celebrating you.
As I got older, I naturally started doing the same thing for my younger sisters. I would decorate for their birthdays, then I became the person who went completely overboard decorating our home for Christmas. I loved transforming spaces, but even more than that, I loved watching people’s reactions when they saw what I created.
Eventually, my family started asking, “Can you decorate this for me?” or “Can you do my event?” One event became another, and somewhere along the way, without a business plan, a grand opening, or even the intention of becoming an event decorator, I became one.
I always say, “You know you truly love something when you can do it 100 times for free and somehow, it still doesn’t feel like you’re working for free.” That is what decorating has always been for me.
I started doing this from the deepest place of love. It was never about how much money I could make from an event. What fulfilled me was knowing that I could take someone’s birthday, baby shower, graduation, wedding celebration, or any moment that mattered to them and make it feel just a little more special.
That is also why budget has always been so important to the heart of The Elegant Ensembles. I don’t believe beautiful celebrations should be reserved for people with the biggest pockets. Whether someone has a modest budget and just wants a simple, beautiful backdrop or they’re planning an elaborate celebration, the feeling they want when they walk into that room is the same: this moment matters.
I decorated organically from 2022 until finally making it official in July 2025, when The Elegant Ensembles was formally established. In many ways, though, the foundation of this business was laid years before that, through parents who made their daughters’ birthdays beautiful, without realizing one of those daughters would grow up and turn that same expression of love into something she could give to other people.
Today, that childhood feeling is still at the center of everything I create. The business has grown, my designs have evolved, and I’ve learned so much about entrepreneurship along the way, but the reason I decorate hasn’t changed.
Regardless of the size of your pockets, your special moments deserve to feel special.
That is what The Elegant Ensembles means to me. It’s not simply about balloons, backdrops, or flowers. It’s about taking the love and intention I experienced growing up and recreating that feeling for someone else, one celebration at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but God’s grace has never stopped carrying me through it.
One of my biggest turning points happened in May 2024. I was hired to create an outdoor prom setup for a client’s daughter. At the time, I was completely self-taught and didn’t even know where professional balloon artists purchased their balloons, so I was using what I could find on Amazon. I charged around $600, which I now know was extremely inexpensive, and during the setup, the majority of the balloons popped.
I was devastated. I sincerely apologized, refunded my client, packed up, and drove home in complete silence. I remember feeling embarrassed, defeated, and questioning whether I was even meant to do this. That day, I swore I would never touch another balloon again, and for months, I didn’t.
Then in August 2024, I felt God putting it on my heart to try again. I didn’t know where to start, so I began following some of the bigger names in the balloon industry and discovered that they actually offered classes. I was shocked, I didn’t even know balloon education existed! I signed up for a professional balloon class and took a train all the way to New Jersey because if I was going to try again, I wanted to learn how to do it correctly.
That experience completely changed my approach. Since September 2024, I’ve invested in learning my craft, understanding professional products and techniques, and continuously improving my work.
Looking back, what felt like my biggest failure became one of my greatest lessons. I learned that passion can introduce you to your gift, but you still have to develop it. Sometimes failure isn’t God telling you to stop; sometimes it’s the push you need to learn, grow, and come back better equipped.
And by God’s grace, that’s exactly what I did.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Elegant Ensembles, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Elegant Ensembles specializes in transforming spaces through balloon installations, custom backdrops, florals, draping, focal points, and event design. We are known for creating beautiful, intentional designs while working with clients across different budgets because I truly believe everyone deserves to have their special moments beautifully celebrated.
What I believe truly sets me apart, though, is the ministry behind my decorating. For me, it is not just about the budget or even simply making an event look beautiful. It is about seeing the beauty of Christ in the beauty of your event and design. It is because of God’s love that we are able to beautify a moment that God Himself has already beautified. **We are simply bringing the beauty of God’s love to visuals.**
That is what makes this work so meaningful to me. Whether it is a birthday, wedding, baby shower, graduation, or another special milestone, there is already beauty and purpose in the moment itself. I just have the privilege of using my gift to make that beauty visible.
That is what I am most proud of. The Elegant Ensembles is not just a business to me. It is an opportunity to use the gift God gave me to serve people, celebrate their special moments, and allow the love and beauty of Christ to show through my work.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very serious but unserious person, and honestly, that still describes me perfectly today. I am very much a no nonsense person when it comes to the things that matter, but I also love to laugh, joke, and make the people around me laugh. Somehow, those two personalities have always existed together. I was even voted Class Clown by the entire Biology Department during undergrad, which I think says everything you need to know!
I am the oldest of four beautiful women and grew up in a Nigerian and Jamaican household, so family, culture, food, and showing love through service have always been a huge part of who I am. Cooking was actually the first way I learned to express love. I especially love cooking Nigerian delicacies, and to this day, feeding people is still one of my favorite ways to show someone I love and care about them.
I think that same love language has naturally found its way into everything I create. Decorating became another way for me to show love, and now even my love for food and drinks has evolved into another business. I am also the owner of Cleft Café, also known as Heavenly Sips, a mobile matcha cart.
Whether I am cooking for someone, decorating their special moment, or making them a matcha, I think the common thread has always been the same. I love making people feel loved.
