Community Highlights: Meet Nate Lucas of Asterisk Web Design Services | Asterisk Visuals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Lucas.

Nate, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out building websites—first making one for my own failed business venture called My Team Collectibles, and then building two cheap ones for other people just to build up a portfolio right here in the DMV. Over time, I saw firsthand how hard it is for local creators and small businesses to keep their online presence and daily work connected. So far we’ve worked with everything from Real Estate agents to UFC fighters

That is why I created Asterisk Visuals and Asterisk WDS as a hands-on, boutique agency instead of a corporate runaround. We bring everything together under one roof: custom web design and graphic design through Asterisk WDS, high-end photography and video production through Asterisk Visuals, and reliable virtual assistant services to handle the backend admin work.

Today, our goal is simple. We build clean digital foundations and take the stress out of the tech side, helping local businesses stand out online while we handle the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest early struggles was watching my first business venture, My Team Collectibles, ultimately fail. That was a tough pill to swallow, but it forced me to learn everything the hard way.

From there, starting out meant taking whatever work I could find—building cheap websites and making cheap logos and graphics just to put together a portfolio and figure out the ropes right here in the DMV. For a long time, I was taking on every single role completely on my own with no team, wearing every hat from design to backend tasks. Handling everything solo took countless late nights and hard work.

But those challenges shaped how I built Asterisk WDS and Asterisk Visuals, and they directly shaped how I assembled my team and the partners I put around me. Every hurdle taught me how to run a hands-on business that actually helps local creators and small businesses get things done without the usual hassle.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Asterisk Web Design Services | Asterisk Visuals ?
Asterisk WDS and Asterisk Visuals operate as a hands-on, boutique-style agency right here in the DMV, built to give local creators and small businesses a straightforward alternative to the corporate runaround. We specialize in bringing everything together under one roof, offering custom web design, professional graphic design, high-end photography and video production, and reliable virtual assistant services to handle the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

What sets us apart is our focus on eliminating logistical friction and building clean digital foundations. Instead of juggling multiple disconnected vendors, our clients get a dedicated team that manages their online presence, visual identity, and backend operations seamlessly.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of the long-term relationships we build and the caliber of partners we align with—from supporting high-performance talent like UFC Flyweight Miranda Maverick to helping local brands look sharp, stand out online, and run smoothly from top to bottom.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
When it comes to staying on top of things at work, my daily workflow heavily relies on Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for all the graphic design, photo editing, and visual assets we handle through Asterisk WDS and Asterisk Visuals, while clean platforms like Wix and Google Sites keep client websites streamlined without the hassle. Outside of the agency, I spend a lot of my spare time editing personal photo and video projects, or jumping into some gaming in between heavy workloads to unwind. Sticking to practical, hands-on tools and keeping that balance is what keeps everything running smoothly.
