Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Cotting.
Hi Grace , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Garage started in spring 2023 meant to serve as a space to bring people together through music post Covid. Over the past 3 years we’ve grown into a thriving community of likeminded individuals throughout the DMV and surrounding areas. We began having legal troubles surrounding our location’s zoning code in April 2025 where we began our attempts to talk with Montgomery County’s Department of Permitting services to find a resolution. As of May 2026 The Garage has been forced to cease all live music events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our early years of operation went as smoothly as we could ask for. We received loads of support from people in our community, garage attendees, and surrounding local business. Our biggest hurdle has been attempting to work with the local government over the past year. They’ve have been increasingly difficult to work with and more often then not will outright refuse to speak with us.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Garage is known for being a cultural hub for the arts. We specialize in live music, but try our best to incorporate all the arts in our space. We are one of the only spaces to see alternative live music in Montgomery County that’s not a bar or brewery. Due to this we are also one of the only spaces that welcomes attendees of all ages and backgrounds. On top of this we are located in a rural part of MoCo’s ag reserve giving our attendees the unique experience of participating in a live show in a farm atmosphere. Surrounding them with animals, open fields, and a sky full of stars.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’d like to say none. We saw a need and through the help and hard work of the local community we made it happen.
