Rising Stars: Meet Genevieve Duvall of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genevieve Duvall.

Hi Genevieve, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to the intersection of creativity and business. I studied graphic design with a background in fine arts and marketing, and early in my career I worked in-house for companies where I learned the importance of brand consistency, storytelling, and designing with intention.

After several years in corporate roles, I realized I wanted to build something of my own. In 2016, I left my full-time position and began growing Genevieve Douglass Design, taking on clients across a variety of industries and helping businesses bring their ideas to life through branding, packaging, print, and digital design.

The transition wasn’t always easy. Building a business requires much more than creative skills. It requires resilience, sales, strategy, organization, and the willingness to keep showing up even when things feel uncertain. Over the years, I had the opportunity to work with incredible clients, including creating packaging that reached major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Home Depot, while also partnering with many local businesses and entrepreneurs.

After becoming a mother in 2022, I found myself entering a new phase personally and professionally. It changed the way I approached my work and made me think more deeply about the kind of brand I wanted to build. That evolution led me to launch Moonlight Creative Co., a company that represents not only my design work, but the way I approach creativity with intention, connection, and a deeper understanding of the people behind the brands.

Today, I specialize in helping businesses develop thoughtful visual identities and creative strategies that connect with their audiences. After more than a decade in design, I still believe the best work comes from understanding the purpose behind a brand and creating something meaningful from there.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has definitely not been a smooth road, but I don’t think any meaningful career or business journey ever is. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you cannot continue doing the same thing forever in a world that is constantly changing. There is rarely one person, one event, or one thing to blame. Instead, you have to be willing to look at what is changing around you and ask how you can grow with it.

The pandemic was a major shift for many businesses, and the way companies approached marketing and spending changed significantly. Some of my long-term clients reduced their marketing budgets, and later economic changes, rising costs, and supply chain challenges affected some of the industries I worked with most closely. As a small business owner, those changes had a direct impact on me.

But every challenge also created an opportunity to evolve. I had to step back and look at where my skills could create the most value and how I could continue growing. That mindset led me into new experiences, including my role with Reclaimed Annapolis, where I expanded beyond design into brand strategy, retail operations, merchandising, and business growth.

The hardest part of entrepreneurship is accepting that the path you start on may not be the exact path you stay on. Growth requires being willing to learn, adapt, and sometimes reinvent yourself. Looking back, the challenges I faced have made me a stronger creative, a better business owner, and more prepared for whatever comes next.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a brand designer and creative director specializing in visual identity, packaging, and brand storytelling. Over the last decade, I have helped businesses bring their ideas to life through intentional design that not only looks beautiful but serves a purpose.

My work started with graphic design, but it quickly grew into something much broader. I have always been fascinated by the connection between design, psychology, and consumer behavior. A successful brand is not just about making something visually appealing; it is about understanding who you are trying to reach, what they need to feel, and how every touchpoint communicates that story.

Throughout my career, I have worked with businesses of all sizes, from local startups to national brands, creating everything from logos and brand identities to packaging, marketing campaigns, websites, and print materials. One of the things I am most proud of is seeing my work exist out in the real world, including packaging designs that have made it onto shelves at Target, Walmart, and Home Depot.

What sets me apart is my combination of creative and strategic thinking. I have a background in fine arts, graphic design, marketing, business, and psychology, which allows me to approach projects from more than just an aesthetic perspective. I do not believe good design is about following trends or making something that simply looks nice. Good design should have intention, solve a problem, connect with people, and help a business grow.

After years of building Genevieve Douglass Design, I launched Moonlight Creative Co. as an evolution of my work and the way I approach creativity. It represents a more holistic approach to branding, helping businesses create identities that feel authentic, memorable, and aligned with who they are.

I am most proud of the relationships I have built along the way and the trust clients place in me to help tell their stories. Whether it is a small business opening its doors for the first time or an established company looking to evolve, I love being part of the process of turning an idea into something tangible that people can experience.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love connecting with people who are passionate about what they are building. Whether you are a small business owner looking to create or refresh your brand, a fellow creative wanting to connect, or someone who simply appreciates thoughtful design, I’m always open to meaningful conversations and new opportunities.

I have always believed that creativity requires flexibility and a willingness to evolve. Businesses change, industries change, and people change. I have spent the last decade building my own path through entrepreneurship, but I also recognize that every chapter brings new opportunities.

After years of building brands, leading projects, and helping businesses tell their stories, I am excited to bring my experience in branding, creative strategy, and business development to a permanent team where I can collaborate with others toward a shared vision.
