Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Brooks.
Hi Kristen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I initially opened Building Beyond Therapy Inc. in 2017 while working part time at a school in Washington, DC. At the time, my intention for the practice was to build a place for myself to transition into full time as I recognized that I couldn’t do the work the way I wanted to in the settings I was working in. I wanted more flexibility in my time, but more importantly, I wanted to be able to provide quality mental health services to people that looked like me. It was important to me that I provided services that were accessible to everyone and felt safe and non-judgmental. When I transitioned into the practice full time in 2018, I had NO idea that it would grow to the practice it has today. I had very little direction in who I wanted to work with, but that quickly changed when I realized that working with women and mothers was my jam!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, this process has been more smooth than bumpy. I have been blessed with amazing supports (personally and professionally) that have helped me lay the foundation for the practice. Don’t get me wrong, every business journey has it’s ups and downs, but I truly believe that the time and energy that I put into building this practice has allowed us to be successful.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Building Beyond Therapy Inc. is a group therapy practice based in Prince George’s County, MD. We serve residents in MD, DC, VA and NC through individual, couples, family and group therapy. We specialize in Perinatal Mental Health, but also have amazing clinicians with specialities in Neurodivergence and working with children & adolescents.
Aside from the therapy services that we offer, we provide a robust internship program for Masters level Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Clinical Mental Health interns, provide supervision and consultation services, and provide trainings and workshops within our community.
I am most proud that we have established a reputation with not only our clients, but also our community partners as a place that offers quality service with integrity, humility, and a little bit of humor mixed in.

The amazing team at Building Beyond Therapy Inc. deserves ALL of the credit! I would not be the leader that I am without the phenomenal women that I get to work beside every day. Many of our team members started as interns with the practice, and have chosen to return to continue their journey in clinical work. I am so grateful to have the unwavering support of my sister-friends, fellow colleagues and of course our families along the way.
