Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Theberge.
Hi Valerie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My artistic journey started at the San Francisco Art Institute where I earned a BFA in painting and drawing. While there, I spent a semester in China which ignited ten years of artistic and spiritual discovery there and in Hong Kong. During that time, I worked under the tutelage of two British artists who taught me the foundational elements of mosaic, which figures prominently in my work today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My artistic development and growth have consistently evolved throughout my career. I credit this to hard work, persistence, and a daily meditation practice which connects me to my creativity and grounds me in the present.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work focuses on large-scale sculptures, 2D artwork and installations, using color, form and shape to interact with the surrounding environment. You can find my work strolling past the World Bank in downtown Washington, DC, private homes and other public squares across the country, from California to Oklahoma. My creative ideas come to fruition at my art studio in Mount Rainier, Maryland. You can find me there almost every day. I am most proud of my consistency and dedication to the evolution of my art.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
While I’m not one for podcasts or online media, I am an avid reader. I usually seek out titles that have nothing to do with my work. Connecting with new ideas and stories outside of the artistic realm actually fuels my creativity in the studio. Some of my creative inspirations include Barbara Hepworth, Niki de Saint Phalle, Louise Bourgeois and Wayne Thiebaud, among others.
