Meet Shavani Hurry of Skinsational Scents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shavani Hurry.

Hi Shavani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Skinsational Scents stands out by specializing in all-natural, holistic skincare products that seamlessly blend wellness benefits with sensory indulgence, providing personalized care for the skin and mind. We are a Veteran owned and Family Operated since 2002. I am the Senior Vice President. We started a Kiosk business on a college campus in Alabama solving skin acne concerns with handcrafted soap making. Then, we produced and offered the highest quality skincare and self-care products in the market. Today, we can enjoy our natural skincare products at major retailers like Wal-Mart and many others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a small business is one of the most rewarding—and challenging—journeys you can take. Success isn’t about knowing everything from day one; it’s about being willing to learn, adapt, and grow. Building a strong foundation in the different areas of business can help your company thrive while making you a more confident and capable leader. Our journey certainly wasn’t easy. We encountered plenty of setbacks, but teamwork, collaboration, critical thinking, and perseverance gave us the tools to keep moving forward. One of our greatest challenges was securing funding. We built Skinsational Scents without a single dollar from a bank, relying instead on grants and our own personal investment to bring our vision to life. For anyone just starting out, my advice is simple: be honest about your business’s needs, recognize your strengths, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Finding a mentor can provide the guidance, support, and perspective needed to overcome obstacles and build a successful business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Skinsational Scents was born from a desire to solve acne and skincare challenges we saw firsthand while on a college campus in Huntsville, Alabama. From the very beginning, our mission has been to create personalized skincare solutions because we understand that no two skin types are alike. Whether you shop in our store or online, you have the freedom to customize products that are tailored to your unique skincare needs.

Customization is at the heart of what makes Skinsational Scents different. We empower our customers to create their own skincare products by choosing from a variety of ingredients and options designed for their individual skin concerns. By putting our customers in the driver’s seat, we deliver a truly personalized experience that sets us apart from our competitors.

Above all, we are most proud of the trust our customers place in us. We have never taken that trust for granted, and we remain committed to honoring it every day. Our promise is to provide high-quality products, exceptional customer service, and skincare solutions that deliver real results.

Since our earliest days, we have made our customers our highest priority. We listen carefully to their concerns, provide thoughtful recommendations, and work diligently to meet their skincare goals. Our customers are more than shoppers—they are the reason we exist and serving them with excellence will always be at the heart of everything we do.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson we’ve learned throughout our entrepreneurial journey is that success is built on resilience, adaptability, and staying true to your purpose. Building a business isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about learning from them and continuing to move forward.

When we launched Skinsational Scents, we faced many obstacles, especially securing the funding needed to grow. Instead of allowing those setbacks to define us, we pursued every opportunity available, applied for grants, invested in ourselves, and remained committed to our vision. Those experiences taught us that determination and resourcefulness can often accomplish what money alone cannot.

We’ve also learned that listening to our customers is one of the greatest investments we can make. Their feedback has helped shape our products, improve our services, and strengthen the trust that has become the foundation of our brand. Every decision we make begins with one question: “How can we better serve our customers?”

Most importantly, we’ve learned that business is about more than selling products—it’s about creating meaningful relationships, solving real problems, and making a positive impact in the lives of the people we serve. If you stay committed to your mission, remain open to learning, and treat every customer with care and respect, growth and success will follow.
