Life & Work with Kacey Bain of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kacey Bain.

Hi Kacey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
All it took was polish and a lamp to make a dream come true. Summer of 2023 I had just graduated Deer Park Magnet Middle School and went to stay at a relative house for the summer in Upstate New York. That relative gave me a gift want I opened it and saw it was a polygel amazon Nail kit for beginners. I was uninterested and distracted at the time so it was tossed to the side. My distraction came from helping to care for that same relative who had gotten surgery. But it unfortunate to say, but that relative passed away in August of 2023.
I went home back in Baltimore feeling sad, with school starting in 3 weeks I’ve started gathering my clothing and accessories. As I’m going through my stuff, I then saw the polygel kit that the relative gave to me. A memory of her final words rings in my head. Later that day I decided to put the plan into action. I sat on my carpet floors, reading the kit manual guide on what to do and did my first set of nails. It wasn’t the best but all I can say is that I tried. As the days went on, I got better and better because of consistent practicing.
I then started to look at videos and tutorials on social media, gaining more knowledge of what to do and how to improve this skill. I practice on my friends, family members, myself or fake plastic-silicone hands. Once I got good at polygel, I started to branch out more and look into other products and services. I build my knowledge around polygel, acrylic, gel x, builder gel and so much more. In July of 2024 I started posting pictures of my nail sets on my personal social media and got a lot of recognition and praise for it. July 8, 2024 a friend had reached out to me, to book an appointment with me.
Even though she was a friend, I treated her as a customer and offered to do it for free since I’m new and a beginner. On the day of her appointment we had a deep conversation about business and she convinced me to start one. Later that night I went on social media and researched business start ups. And in August 2024 I started a business, promoted myself online, told my family and friends about it. My prices were really low, starting at $5 and 10$ for nail sets.
Business was still very slow for me but I still pulled. Summer of 2025, I had made a tiktok and went viral and ever since, my calendar has been filled up. Though I felt overwhelmed, I pushed through because I prayed for times like this. Thanks to the consistent bookings, I had switched to a website and raised my prices.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced a lot of challenges such as failure, lack of motivation and burn outs. But the biggest challenges was not being taken serious by older clients, mainly because I’m home base, my age and I’m not licensed as yet. I am working towards getting licensed but I have to be at the age of 18, and completely a certain amount of hours which would be in the way of high school.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
