Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started singing in church with my family. I come from the James family in Princess Anne, Maryland, where music has always been a part of who we are. Growing up, I watched my aunts, uncles, and siblings minister through music in churches all over the Eastern Shore, so singing was something I naturally fell in love with. I started singing around six years old, writing songs by seven, and performing at talent shows and local open mics throughout middle school. I officially began releasing music when I was fifteen.
As I got older, life started moving fast. I got married at nineteen, became a homeowner at twenty-one, built multiple businesses, founded a nonprofit, and eventually became a mother. Somewhere along the way, I stepped away from music because I felt the pressure of trying to be everything for everyone else. I never stopped loving it, but I put my gift on the back burner while I focused on being a wife, homemaker, entrepreneur, and mom.
Everything changed when my life took an unexpected turn. I went through heartbreak, divorce, financial uncertainty, and found myself back home with my parents. Instead of letting those experiences define me, I returned to the one place that had always felt like home: music. I spent months driving hours to the studio while balancing motherhood, business, and healing, and those experiences became the foundation of my project, *UnStayAble*.
Since releasing the project, it’s grown beyond anything I imagined. The music has accumulated over 30,000 streams across platforms, I’ve gained more than 5,000 new followers across social media, and blogs throughout the U.S. and U.K. have shared my story. More than the numbers, I’m grateful that people are connecting with the honesty in the music.
None of this would be possible without the Most High God, who never stopped calling me back to my purpose, or without my parents, grandparents, siblings, and family, who believed in me even when I struggled to believe in myself. Today, I’m simply committed to telling the truth through my music and creating art that reminds people they can always begin again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. If anything, the challenges are what shaped me into the artist I am today.
One of the biggest struggles was learning not to tie my identity to what I could produce. After releasing music as a teenager, I felt the pressure that comes with being a young creative. I started chasing perfection instead of simply creating, and eventually I stepped away from music altogether because I thought leaving it behind would bring me peace.
Life continued moving quickly. I got married at a young age, became a homeowner, built two businesses, founded a nonprofit, and became a mother. From the outside, it looked like I had everything together, but behind the scenes I was navigating heartbreak, the end of my marriage, financial uncertainty, single motherhood, and the emotional weight of starting over.
There were days I would drive hours to the studio, record songs, film content, then rush home to breastfeed my son, prepare bottles, run my businesses, and still find time to take care of myself and my family. It wasn’t glamorous, and there were plenty of moments when I questioned whether I should keep going.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that setbacks don’t have to become your identity. Every challenge gave me something honest to write about and reminded me that purpose doesn’t disappear just because life gets difficult. Looking back, those seasons didn’t stop my story. They gave it depth, and ultimately led to the creation of *UnStayAble*.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I’m a storyteller. I’m a singer-songwriter whose music blends elements of R&B, soul, pop, and alternative influences to tell honest stories about healing, identity, love, faith, and resilience. Every song I write comes from lived experience, and my goal is for people to feel seen when they listen.
Outside of music, I’m also an entrepreneur and community builder. I’m the founder of two businesses and a nonprofit organization, and those experiences have taught me discipline, leadership, and how to create opportunities not only for myself but for others. Those worlds naturally influence my artistry because I’ve never viewed music as separate from purpose.
What I’m most proud of is *UnStayAble*. It’s more than a project. It’s a testimony. Creating it required balancing motherhood, entrepreneurship, healing, and rebuilding my life while refusing to give up on the gift God placed inside of me. Seeing the project resonate with listeners, surpass 30,000 streams across platforms, attract thousands of new supporters, and receive recognition from blogs in both the U.S. and U.K. has been incredibly humbling.
I think what sets me apart is my willingness to be transparent. I’m not interested in creating an illusion of perfection. I’d rather make music that tells the truth. I openly talk about rebuilding after divorce, becoming a young mother, rediscovering purpose, and choosing faith in seasons that didn’t make sense. Those experiences don’t define me, but they shape the perspective I bring to my music.
Ultimately, I want my career to be known for more than great songs. I want people to remember how my music made them feel. If someone walks away believing they can begin again, embrace their story, or find hope after hearing my work, then I’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
One thing I’d love for people to know is where the name Jimani comes from. It’s actually a combination of my first name, Jordan, and my middle name, Iman. The artist I am today was born long before I ever stepped into a recording studio. She was born in my childhood home, standing in the kitchen, surrounded by a family that loved music.
One of the people who played the biggest role in that journey was my oldest brother, Marcus Walston, whom we all call Mark. He reminded me that the gifts God gives us aren’t meant to stay hidden. He told me that it would be a waste not to use what I’d been given because my story and my music could resonate with people I’d never even meet. That conversation gave me the confidence to believe I could be part of something bigger than myself.
Being seen by the people who love you is one thing. Being visible to people you’ve never met is something entirely different. It’s uncomfortable. It requires vulnerability. But I’ve learned that visibility isn’t just about gaining an audience. It’s about making room for connection.
The moment you stop hiding, you begin attracting the people who are meant to find you. You attract opportunities, community, encouragement, and sometimes even the answers to prayers you didn’t know someone else had. More importantly, you may become the answer to someone else’s prayer.
If there’s one thing I hope readers take away from my story, it’s this: don’t underestimate your impact. There are people you’ll never meet who need to see you pursue your purpose so they’ll have the courage to pursue theirs. Sometimes the biggest thing standing between you and the life you’re called to live is simply getting out of your own way.
