Check Out Samia Harris’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samia Harris.

Hi Samia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I was always very crafty. My mom wasn’t big on video games and technology to keep me busy as a kid, so she would always buy me arts and crafts activities to do at home and even in the car. As I got older, I learned how to make almost anything. I learned how to sew, crochet, paint, draw, make clay creations, jewelry, blankets, and more. I always knew I wanted to have a business, but I didn’t exactly know what I wanted it to be. From there, I would start little businesses starting as early as middle school, trying to find my niche. When I got to college, I was struggling with finding the best major for me. I found myself in a depressive state and decided to drop out of school. When I came home, I wanted to focus on starting a business but was still so indecisive. My mom had then told me, “Your business should be centered around something you love”. I knew from there that the one thing that brings me so much joy was gift giving. It is my strongest love language, and for years my family calls me Santa Claus because of how crazy my gifts are. So I came up with Mia Luxe Gift Shop, but although I had a name and idea, I still didn’t know my product. I prayed about it, and one day my friend invited me out for her birthday, and I was trying ti think of a gift idea. I had seen these big crazy bouquets on Pinterest and Instagram and decided to give it a try. I made her the bouquet and took it to her brunch in DC. She received so many compliments, and others were asking me to make them one. From there, I started creating flower arrangements, and my business grew

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business is not easy at all. I always tell people that if your only intention is money, then your business will fail. I experienced ups and downs like most, but what I think helped me overcome those challenges were my faith and passion. If you are not passionate about what you do then you won’t succeed. A business starts with working 24/7 not 9-5, 24/7. And with that, you have to love everything you do.
