Inspiring Conversations with Emily Whitacre of Maryland Dance Project

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Whitacre.

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Jess Naylon and Emily Whitacre grew up in different states, but they shared a lifelong passion for dance. Their paths crossed years later as members of the Washington Commanders’ Co-Ed Dance Team, the Command Force. After deciding to retire from the team following the same season, they jokingly tossed around the idea of starting a business together. What began as a lighthearted conversation quickly evolved into a real business plan, with the simple goal of hosting occasional pop-up dance classes. At this time, Maryland Dance Project was born. Three years later, that vision has grown into a thriving dance community, featuring a comprehensive youth program alongside a popular adult program that welcomes and trains dancers of all ages and experience levels.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Up until recently, we have both spent the entirety of Maryland Dance Project’s existence juggling full-time jobs on top of running the studio. It has been our biggest challenge, as having enough time and energy to balance both careers felt nearly impossible most days, but the success and love for our business helped us keep going. We are very happy and relieved to be full-time studio owners now, who will be able to be more present, thoughtful, and engaged at MDDP!

We’ve been impressed with Maryland Dance Project, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Maryland Dance Project is a local, women owned small business co-founded by former NFL Dancers Jess Naylon and Emily Whitacre. MDDP has created a transformational and inclusive community, establishing a proven track record of training dancers of all ages and abilities to learn, grow, and be challenged. Dancers 18 months–18 years are welcome to take advantage of our fully comprehensive youth program with our highly experienced and professional instructors.

MDDP also has drop-in adult classes for dancers of all abilities, from absolute beginner to advanced. Our popular Stadium Series has trained dancers to reach their goals as professional dancers and cheerleaders on NFL, NBA, UFL and MASL teams nationally.

Dance can be a competitive sport, even when taking classes just for fun. We put a large emphasis on being supportive and inclusive to everyone.
