Inspiring Conversations with Dinelly Holder of Higher Life Pathways Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dinelly Holder.

Hi Dinelly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in the counseling field more than 20 years ago because I genuinely wanted to help people understand themselves and experience lasting change. Early on, I realized that many people weren’t just struggling with isolated problems, they were caught in unhealthy patterns that affected every area of their lives and relationships. That realization shaped the direction of my career.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals, couples, and families, becoming licensed in four states and earning my Ph.D. Along the way, I specialized in trauma, anxiety, and relationship counseling, including EMDR trauma counseling, because I wanted to provide evidence-based approaches that help people move beyond simply managing symptoms to experiencing real healing.

Today, I own Higher Life Pathways, where I help individuals heal from trauma and anxiety while also helping couples break unhealthy relationship cycles and build emotionally healthy, secure relationships. In addition to my clinical work, I’ve written two books, developed educational courses and workshops, and create online content to make mental health education accessible to people who may never walk into a therapist’s office.

What continues to motivate me is seeing people move from feeling stuck to living with greater clarity, emotional health, and intentionality. That’s the work I’ve dedicated my career to, and it’s still what excites me every day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many business owners, I’ve also had to navigate the challenges of growing a private practice while continuing to serve clients at a high level. Building a business requires a completely different skill set than being a great clinician. I’ve had to learn marketing, leadership, finances, systems, and how to adapt as the mental health field continues to evolve.

There have also been personal seasons that tested my resilience. Balancing family life, pursuing advanced education, and managing the unexpected challenges that life brings has required perseverance and flexibility. Those experiences have given me a deeper level of empathy and have strengthened the way I serve others.

Looking back, I wouldn’t describe the journey as easy, but I would describe it as incredibly worthwhile. Every challenge has refined both who I am as a person and how I show up as a therapist, educator, and business owner.

We’ve been impressed with Higher Life Pathways Counseling Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Higher Life Pathways is a counseling practice dedicated to helping people understand themselves so they can break unhealthy cycles and intentionally choose healthier lives and relationships. We believe lasting change begins with self-awareness, because when people understand the “why” behind their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, they are better equipped to make different choices.

We specialize in trauma, anxiety, relationship issues, and couples counseling, offering traditional therapy as well as EMDR trauma therapy and intensive counseling programs for individuals and couples who are ready to make meaningful progress in a shorter period of time. Our approach is practical, evidence-based, and focused on giving clients tools they can continue using long after therapy ends.

I think what sets us apart is that we don’t just help people feel better, we help them understand themselves better. My goal is for clients to leave with clarity, practical skills, and a deeper awareness of the patterns that have been shaping their lives and relationships. I believe insight without action doesn’t create change, so therapy should be both reflective and practical.

Beyond the counseling office, I’m passionate about making mental health education accessible to everyone. Through books, educational workshops, online content, and speaking, I aim to answer the questions people are already asking and provide trustworthy, practical guidance they can apply in everyday life.

What I’m most proud of isn’t simply the practice we’ve built, it’s the impact we’ve been able to make over more than two decades. Walking alongside individuals and couples as they heal from trauma, overcome anxiety, restore relationships, and discover healthier ways of living continues to be the greatest privilege of my career. My hope is that Higher Life Pathways becomes known not only as a place where people receive therapy, but as a trusted resource for lifelong emotional health and healthy relationships.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to never stop being a student. The counseling field is constantly evolving, and no matter how much experience you gain, there is always more to learn. Continue investing in your education, seek quality supervision and consultation, and remain curious. The moment we think we’ve learned everything is the moment we stop growing.

I would also encourage new clinicians and entrepreneurs not to compare their beginning to someone else’s middle. It’s easy to look at an established practice or successful business and assume it happened overnight, but most people don’t see the years of learning, mistakes, and persistence that came before it. Focus on serving people well, stay consistent, and trust that growth comes one step at a time.

If I could go back and tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: build systems sooner. Whether it’s your business operations, finances, marketing, or self-care, good systems create sustainability. Passion may get you started, but structure is what allows you to continue serving others for the long term.

Finally, remember why you started. Skills, credentials, and business growth are all important, but people don’t just need knowledgeable professionals, they need someone who is present, authentic, and genuinely cares. Never lose sight of the people behind the appointments, because changing even one life is meaningful work.
