Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana María Anguesomo Nzang.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a singer/songwriter, dancer, and content creator from Montgomery County, Maryland, by way of Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. I spent my formative years moving across three continents which forced me to adapt to new cultures. This shaped my worldview and continues to influence my art today.
I’ve been a content creator since my early teens, using social media as an outlet to share my passions. In 2019, I made the decision to pursue music professionally, bringing together my love of songwriting, performance, and storytelling. Since then, I’ve grown a community of loyal supporters while continuing to carve out my own lane as an artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many artists, one of my first challenges was convincing people close to me that music was a legitimate career. My parents valued education and stability, so pursuing a creative path as an African wasn’t always easy. I had to work twice as hard— not only to prove to prove to them that I was serious, but also to prove it to myself.
Beyond that, navigating my career while dealing with immigration uncertainty has been incredibly difficult. As an asylum seeker, there have been periods where my legal status stripped me of opportunities that many artists take for granted. It has forced me to be resourceful, patient, and resilient, and it’s made every milestone feel that much more meaningful to me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter, dancer, and content creator whose work centers on culture, identity, and storytelling. While many people know me for my anti-racism and cultural content online, those same themes are reflected in my music.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend multiple creative disciplines. My voice has taken me to platforms like NPR’s Tiny Desk, my dancing has put me on stages like Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, and my content has attracted a community of over one million followers across several platforms. Additionally, as a polyglot, I also incorporate multiple languages into my music, reflecting my global upbringing.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Every time I came home from boarding school, my dad would take me to Toys “R” Us and let me pick out anything I wanted. While I was away, I’d daydream about coming home to him bringing me my favorite chips and little gifts. In hindsight, I realize that it was never really about the toys or the treats. It was about feeling loved and making up for the time we’d spent apart!
