Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadja Cox.
Hi Nadja, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Maryland, where my passion for the arts began at an early age through painting, cinematography, and creative expression. While studying English with a minor in Digital Media at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, I taught myself photography and became the lead photographer for a modeling organization.
In 2019, I launched Photogen.nicc, specializing in concert photography, portraits, graduations, and branding sessions. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph artists including Kehlani, JoJo, Bryce Vine, Wale, and Hiatus Kaiyote. Along the way, I’ve expanded my work into graphic design, social media content creation, and video editing, helping artists and brands tell their stories through impactful visuals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been an easy journey. My biggest challenge has been investing in myself—both financially and mentally. Photography is far from an inexpensive career, and as technology continues to advance, equipment quickly becomes outdated or stops receiving support, making it necessary to constantly reinvest. It often feels like there’s always another piece of gear or software needed to stay competitive.
Over time, the pressure to keep up with trends and constantly compare myself to others began to take a toll on my mental health. I questioned whether all of the time, money, and energy I was investing was worth it. There were moments when I felt exhausted, overlooked, and ready to give up. Looking back, those challenges taught me resilience and reminded me why I started—to create meaningful work that tells stories, not to chase comparisons.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer and creative specializing in concert photography, portraits, branding, and visual storytelling. Through my business, Photogen.nicc, I also provide graphic design, social media content creation, and short-form video editing, helping artists, entrepreneurs, and brands create content that connects with their audience.
I’m most proud of building a business from the ground up and having the opportunity to photograph artists such as Kehlani, JoJo, Bryce Vine, Wale, and Hiatus Kaiyote. Every project has allowed me to grow creatively while capturing meaningful moments for my clients.
What sets me apart is my ability to tell authentic stories through every image and piece of content I create. I focus on making people feel comfortable in front of the camera so their personality naturally shines through. Rather than simply taking photos, I create an experience and deliver visuals that are bold, vibrant, and memorable.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Perception is everything. Don’t get caught up in the numbers game. Ten likes may seem small online, but that’s ten real people who connected with your work. One hundred views is the equivalent of a room full of people watching what you created.
Going viral doesn’t automatically lead to paying clients or long-term success. Focus less on comparing yourself to everyone else and more on developing your craft. The right audience will appreciate your work for what it is. Stay authentic, keep creating, and let your passion be stronger than the pressure to chase algorithms.
