Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Tettimer.
Kara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I never imagined my career would take me from the classroom to the farm. I spent years as a teacher, earning my bachelor’s degree in English, my teaching certification, a master’s degree, and my certification in Administration and Supervision. While I loved education, I eventually realized my passion was leading me in a different direction.
In May 2022, I retired from teaching and took a leap of faith to pursue my dream of farming. What began as a small produce stand and a vision to create a family-friendly farm has grown into Rolling Acres Farm—a destination that welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
Today, Rolling Acres Farm is home to Highland cattle and other farm animals, a thriving produce stand, educational programs, private farm tours, and one of Southern Maryland’s favorite seasonal destinations. Although my classroom looks very different today, I still get to educate children and families every day through agriculture, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a farm from the ground up takes a lot of hard work, long hours, and a willingness to take risks. There have been challenges such as unpredictable weather, crop failures, equipment breakdowns, and the constant balancing act of trying to grow while keeping the experience affordable for families.
One of the biggest challenges has been building something people trust. In the beginning, not many people knew who we were, so every customer, every event, and every social media post mattered. We worked hard to earn our community’s support by creating a place where families feel welcome and can make lasting memories.
Like any small business, there have been setbacks, but each challenge has taught us something and helped us grow. Looking back, those difficult moments have made Rolling Acres Farm stronger and have shaped it into what it is today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Rolling Acres Farm & Tettimer’s Produce Stand. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Rolling Acres Farm is more than just a farm—it’s a place where families can connect with agriculture in a fun, hands-on way. We offer a unique blend of agritourism, education, and fresh local produce, creating experiences that bring people of all ages together.
We’re known for our Highland cattle, family-friendly events, educational programs, and our annual Fall Festival. Whether guests are meeting our animals, picking up fresh produce from Tettimer’s Produce Stand, or spending the day enjoying our farm attractions, our goal is for every visit to be both memorable and meaningful.
What sets us apart is our commitment to education, authenticity, and community. As a former teacher, I believe every visit to the farm should be an opportunity to learn. We strive to give families a real look at agriculture while creating a welcoming environment where children can explore, ask questions, and make lifelong memories.
More than anything, I’m proud of the community we’ve built. Rolling Acres Farm has become a place where families return year after year, traditions are made, and people leave with a greater appreciation for farming and the local families who make it possible.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe agriculture is becoming more important than ever as people want to know where their food comes from and who is growing it. Over the next 5–10 years, I think we’ll continue to see more farms diversify by combining traditional farming with agritourism, education, and direct-to-consumer sales.
Families today are looking for meaningful experiences, not just places to visit. They want to meet the farmers, interact with animals, support local businesses, and create memories together. I also think there will be an even greater appreciation for buying local and supporting small family farms as people recognize the value of fresh food and sustainable agriculture.
For us, that means continuing to innovate while staying true to our mission—creating authentic farm experiences, educating the next generation about agriculture, and strengthening the connection between our community and local farming.
