Exploring Life & Business with Megan Lautz of RescueRD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Lautz.

Hi Megan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a dietitian and strength coach, but my path changed when I began working directly with firefighters, police officers, and other first responders. I quickly realized that most nutrition advice was not designed for 24-hour shifts, interrupted meals, sleep deprivation, high-stress calls, and physically demanding training.

That experience led me to specialize in first responder nutrition and eventually start RescueRD. Over the years, I have worked inside fire and police departments, visited hundreds of stations, supported recruit academies, and helped thousands of first responders improve their energy, performance, and health with practical strategies that actually fit the job.

Today, I provide presentations, workshops, digital training, and nutrition resources to public safety departments across the country. I also consult in professional baseball with the Baltimore Orioles organization. What started as a niche I never expected has grown into a career focused on helping high-performing people fuel themselves better in a busy world

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Early in my career I lost what I thought was my dream job in corporate wellness, which was incredibly difficult at the time. However, that experience pushed me to build something of my own and focus on a group that is often underserved: first responders.

Another challenge has been earning credibility in a profession I have never personally worked in. Some first responders initially questioned whether a civilian dietitian could truly understand the realities of the job. I have had to chip away at that skepticism by spending time in stations and academies, listening to their experiences, learning the demands of shift work, and consistently providing practical advice that fits their lives. That trust was not built overnight, but it has made the work and the relationships I have developed even more meaningful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about RescueRD?
RescueRD provides practical, evidence-based nutrition support for firefighters, police officers, EMS professionals, dispatchers, and other public safety professionals. I specialize in translating nutrition science into realistic strategies that work with long shifts, interrupted meals, overnight calls, high-stress environments, intense training, and limited food options.

My services include live presentations, hands-on workshops, digital nutrition training, recruit academy support, one-on-one coaching, and practical resources for departments. Common topics include hydration, caffeine, supplements, meal planning, workout fueling, sleep, injury recovery, and eating well during shift work.

What sets RescueRD apart is that the advice is built around the realities of the job. I have spent years working directly with fire and police departments, visiting stations, supporting academies, and listening to what first responders actually struggle with. I do not expect someone working a 24-hour shift to eat like a person with a predictable desk job and a perfectly stocked kitchen.

I am most proud that the brand has become known for being practical, honest, and nonjudgmental. The goal is not perfection. It is helping first responders build simple systems that improve energy, performance, recovery, and long-term health. I want readers to know that first responders deserve nutrition support created specifically for them, and that is exactly what RescueRD is working to provide.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is serving first responders who have historically been overlooked in nutrition and wellness. They deserve science-backed guidance that is practical for shift work, high-stress environments, unpredictable schedules, and the physical demands of the job, not another fad or unrealistic plan.

I also want RescueRD to create meaningful career opportunities for dietitians who understand first responder culture. My goal is to build a network of culturally competent professionals who can earn the trust of departments, respect the realities of the job, and provide nutrition support that is both evidence-based and genuinely useful.
