Today we’d like to introduce you to Nanny Trippe.
Hi Nanny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
What began as shared space between two artists friends has evolved into the town of Easton’s liveliest and most respected art gallery on the eastern shore of Maryland, popular with locals as well as visitors. We started as neighbors with small office space studios at Tidewater Studios in 2009.
Don Hilderbrandt was resurrecting his carrer as a watercolorist after a successful career as urban planner and landscape architect, having traveled and lived internationally as well as across the United States.
Nanny Trippe was rediscovering her eye through the lens and presenting her passion for photography after many years away from the art world.
We discovered we had both portrayed the same well-known local oak tree in our respective mediums. A show exhibiting our tree pieces was presented at Tidewater Studios. The response was so positive about how well our work complemented each other, we decided to open Trippe-Hilderbrandt Studios-a gallery as well as working studio in 2010. A preferred location became available in the fall of 2013 and we moved across the street to 23 N Harrison St,, the current location, and evolved into Trippe-Hilderbrandt Gallery and invited the featured artists to exhibit. After Don moved to the west coast, the gallery became The Trippe Gallery. Celebrating its 14th year, the gallery represents over 40 award winning artists in all mediums, exhibiting artwork to appeal to the beginning collector as well as the seasoned one.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be honest, the gallery has taken on a life of its own! When you do something you love and enjoy, it becomes easy to be successful-not to say there hasn’t been a great deal of hard work involved! I have been fortunate in the artists that are represented as they are all top professionals and extraordinary people.
We’ve been impressed with The Trippe Gallery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Celebrating its 14th year this year! The gallery is known for exhibiting A-list award winning artists from around the globe in all mediums-oil paintings, watercolor, etching, bronze sculpture, ceramics, mixed media and fine art photography. The gallery presents a warm and friendly atmosphere-the spacious interior has large windows casting natural light so the art is viewed in a natural environment, and is known for its knowledgeable and helpful staff. The artwork is constantly rotating with special exhibitions and featured artists throughout the year. In addition, I offer a home curation service where I will bring artwork to your home or office to see if you like it and it suits your spaces, and hang it if you choose to keep it. Otherwise, I handle commissions for specific spaces and subject matter as well as portrait commissions. The gallery has a loyal following of collectors of all ranges. I am most proud of the reaction of visitors when they see the quality of the artwork-they are so impressed and love the gallery. I am also proud to have been voted “Best Art Gallery” for the eastern shore of Maryland by What’s Up Media for the past four years!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have been extremely fortunate in the people involved in my gallery beginning with my original artist friend, partner and watercolor artist Don Hilderbrandt. I learned a great deal from him. As well, there have been other mentors, especially my father who taught me good business sense and the importance of personal service to clients and my mother who always believed in my ability to succeed. Then there are the artists I have chosen to be members of the gallery-we are a family-and their talents are a big part of the gallery’s respected reputation.
