Hidden Gems: Meet Clara Brown of Cladel’s couture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clara Brown.

Hi Clara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Clara Brown, I was born and raised in Africa. While earning my bachelor’s degree in Economic Education, I began my entry in the beauty industry in 2009. I learned how to become a makeup artist from a local professional. I began freelance work for weddings, shows, and other events. That’s when I developed a true love for seeing people look beautiful and knowing it was my handwork that enhanced their beauty brought me great joy.

After graduation I worked in various business fields, but still never felt fulfilled. I still had that drive to make people look beautiful and share in their joy. This is when fashion design became my outlet for joy. Started my training at age 26, Training in a new industry as an apprentice wasn’t easy for me, as I had been used to taking the lead in my previous professional positions, using a manual machine which required using my leg to pedal causing constant muscle pull and other challenges that could make me want to give up. My drive for fashion design and seeing my creations come to life brought back my joy.

Relocating to America was a big shift on my business because I was trained to make custom made dress and that’s what I love doing but in America especially in my city I get more alterations which was easy to adjust because since I’m used to creating custom made dress it was easy to handle any dress I’m working with and understand the needs of each client.

I get many compliments from clients, they take their time to write reviews for me, words cannot best express how thankful I’m to their kind words and reviews because my business cannot move without them and their reviews

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every business has its ups and downs, and mine is:

– The winter season: My business slows down, which is understandable because not everyone wants to get married during the cold weather.
– Getting fabric: It’s not always easy. Sometimes, I need to see and feel the texture of the fabric because online vendors might not market it well, or even finding the exact fabric you need can be draining so when I have big projects, I have to travel to New York where I can get variety of selections. I must say, Mood Fabric is my go-to.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
