Life & Work with Emmanuel Lewis. ( Dj Ibis) of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmanuel Lewis. ( Dj Ibis).

Hi Emmanuel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a part of my life. Growing up in a Caribbean household with Trinidadian roots, music wasn’t just entertainment—it was the heartbeat of every family gathering, celebration, and community event.

My passion for DJing started at a young age. My uncles owned some of the biggest sound systems in our community, and I was fascinated by how they could seamlessly blend songs together and keep the energy of a party alive. I was the kid who loved wiring speakers, helping set up sound systems, and experimenting with my dad’s old turntables to play vinyl records.

I learned to DJ the traditional way—on vinyl records. From there, I transitioned to CDs and eventually to digital DJing using my computer. I still remember saving every dollar I could until I finally bought my first DJ controller. Once I had it, I practiced every single day. I became obsessed with learning how to beatmatch, blend songs smoothly, and create seamless transitions that kept people dancing without interruption.

As my confidence and skills grew, I started DJing family events and local parties. Those opportunities eventually led to an incredible experience DJing on a Caribbean radio station in my area, where I was able to share the music I grew up loving with an even larger audience.

From radio, I expanded into private events, weddings, festivals, and clubs. Each event taught me something new—not just about music, but about people. I learned how to read a crowd, understand the energy in a room, and know exactly when to switch genres or play the perfect song to create an unforgettable moment. Along the way, I developed my own style and found my voice as a DJ.

One of my biggest dreams was to DJ on a Caribbean music truck during Carnival. Watching those trucks growing up inspired me because they represented the culture, energy, and unity that Caribbean music brings. The day I finally stepped onto that truck behind the DJ booth was a full-circle moment. It wasn’t just another performance—it was the realization of a dream that began years earlier with my dad’s turntables and my uncles’ sound systems.

Today, every time I perform as DJ Ibis, I carry those experiences with me. My goal is more than just playing music; it’s creating memories, bringing people together, and sharing the rich culture and energy of Caribbean music with every crowd I perform for. No matter how big the stage becomes, I never forget where it all started—with a love for music, family, and the desire to make people dance.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any dream, the journey wasn’t always easy.

One of my biggest challenges was balancing school while pursuing my passion for DJing. There were days when I would spend hours studying, then stay up late practicing my mixes or preparing for an event. It took discipline, sacrifice, and a lot of time management to stay committed to both my education and my passion.

Another challenge was the financial side of DJing. It’s an expensive passion. Quality speakers, mixers, controllers, lighting, microphones, and other equipment can cost thousands of dollars. When I first started, I couldn’t afford everything I wanted, so I saved every paycheck, bought equipment piece by piece, and slowly built my setup over time. Every new piece of gear represented another step toward my dream.

Breaking into the industry was another obstacle. When you’re new, very few people know your name, and getting opportunities isn’t easy. I remember reaching out to clubs and promoters, hoping someone would give me a chance. Many times, I was overlooked simply because I wasn’t a well-known DJ. There were nights when I watched others perform, wondering when my opportunity would come.

Instead of letting rejection discourage me, I used it as motivation. I continued practicing, improving my craft, networking, and accepting every opportunity I could—from family events and private parties to community gatherings and radio shows. Every event, no matter how big or small, helped me grow as both a DJ and a professional.

Looking back, those struggles made me appreciate every opportunity I’ve earned. They taught me patience, resilience, and the value of believing in yourself even when no one else sees your vision. Those experiences shaped not only the DJ I am today but also the person I’ve become.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a DJ, audio engineer, and entertainer who specializes in Caribbean music, including Soca, Bouyon, Dancehall, Reggae, and Afrobeats. Whether I’m performing at Carnival, weddings, private events, clubs, or festivals, my goal is always the same—to create an unforgettable experience that brings people together through music.

Beyond performing, I have a passion for sound system design and audio technology. I’ve always enjoyed building and wiring sound systems, understanding how equipment works together, and creating high-quality audio experiences. That technical background complements my performances and gives me a deeper appreciation for the craft.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend technical skill with cultural authenticity. I don’t just play songs—I create moments. Every performance is built around the crowd, the atmosphere, and the emotion of the event. I believe great DJs don’t simply play music; they tell a story, build energy, and leave people with memories they’ll talk about long after the event is over.

No matter where I perform, my mission remains the same: to celebrate Caribbean culture, connect people through music, and deliver an experience that feels authentic, energetic, and unforgettable.

What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, my goal is to continue growing DJ Ibis into a recognized brand within the Caribbean music and entertainment industry. I want to expand beyond local events by performing at major Carnival celebrations, music festivals, and international events while continuing to represent Caribbean culture with pride.

I’m also focused on producing more original content, including live mixes, event recaps, and creative collaborations with artists, musicians, and content creators. Building a stronger online presence through platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok is a big part of that vision, allowing me to connect with audiences around the world and share the energy of Caribbean music with people everywhere.

One of my long-term goals is to produce and release my own music and remixes while continuing to develop high-quality live productions. I’m passionate about creating experiences that go beyond simply playing music, incorporating professional sound, lighting, and visuals to make every performance unforgettable.

Outside of DJing, I plan to continue growing my knowledge of audio engineering, technology, and event production. My background in engineering has given me a unique perspective on sound systems and production, and I want to continue combining those technical skills with my creativity.

Most importantly, I want to inspire the next generation of DJs by showing
