Community Highlights: Meet Benjamin Atanga of The Stretch Loft

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Atanga.

Hi Benjamin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Cameroon, West Africa, and my journey has been driven by a passion for helping people improve their lives. After moving to the United States, I explored different career paths before discovering my calling in the wellness industry. Over the past 20 years, and especially the last decade in stretch therapy, I’ve worked with thousands of clients and realized that pain is often connected to stress, trauma, movement patterns, and lifestyle—not just tight muscles.

That realization led me to create The Stretch Loft, where our mission is to help people move better, feel better, and live with less pain. We’ve had the privilege of working with everyone from professional athletes to everyday people looking to improve their quality of life. Seeing clients regain mobility and confidence is what continues to inspire me.

As our business grew, I saw a need for more trained professionals in this field, so I founded The Stretch Loft Academy to teach others how to build meaningful careers in stretch therapy. My goal is to help people turn their hands into income while making a real impact in their communities.

Like every entrepreneur, I’ve faced setbacks, health challenges, and difficult business decisions, but each one has strengthened my purpose and resilience. Today, my vision is to grow The Stretch Loft into a nationally recognized brand while helping establish stretch therapy as a respected profession. Whether I’m working with a client, teaching students, or speaking on a stage, my mission remains the same: to help people transform their health, their careers, and ultimately their lives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges has been being an early pioneer in an industry that very few people understood. When I started The Stretch Loft, there wasn’t a blueprint to follow. There weren’t many successful stretch therapy businesses to learn from, so much of what we’ve built came through trial and error, making mistakes, learning from them, and constantly improving.

Another challenge was educating the public. Most people believed stretching was only for professional athletes or that doing yoga once a week was enough. We had to change the conversation by helping people understand that stretch therapy is a proactive form of healthcare that can help with pain, mobility, recovery, and overall quality of life. That took years of consistency, education, and building trust within the community.

Building a business in the Washington, D.C. area has also come with unique challenges. Because so much of our local economy depends on the federal government, we’ve had to navigate government shutdowns, layoffs, inflation, and economic uncertainty that directly affected our clients’ spending habits. Like many small business owners, we’ve had to adapt, reinvent ourselves, and find creative ways to continue serving people through every season.

Looking back, I’m actually grateful for those challenges. They forced me to become a better entrepreneur, a better leader, and a better problem solver. Every obstacle has strengthened both me and the business, and it’s given me the experience to now help others avoid many of the mistakes I had to learn the hard way.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Stretch Loft was built on the belief that movement is medicine and that people shouldn’t have to accept pain or limited mobility as a normal part of life. We specialize in one-on-one assisted stretch therapy, helping people improve flexibility, reduce pain, recover from injuries, enhance athletic performance, and simply move better in their everyday lives. While many people think of stretching as something you do before a workout, we’ve spent years educating our community that professional stretch therapy is a specialized service that can have a tremendous impact on overall health and quality of life.

What truly sets us apart is our approach. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all sessions. Every client receives an assessment, and each treatment is customized based on their body, goals, movement patterns, and lifestyle. We combine stretch therapy with bodywork techniques and years of hands-on experience to help our clients achieve lasting results—not just temporary relief.

As the industry grew, I realized there weren’t enough qualified practitioners to meet the demand. That inspired me to create The Stretch Loft Academy, where we train massage therapists, personal trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists, and aspiring wellness professionals to become highly skilled stretch practitioners. Our mission goes beyond teaching techniques—we help people build meaningful careers, create financial opportunities, and positively impact the health of their communities.

What I’m most proud of is that we’ve helped pioneer and legitimize stretch therapy as a profession. We’ve introduced thousands of people to a service they didn’t know existed, helped clients regain confidence in their bodies, and created career paths for wellness professionals looking to expand their skills and income.

At the end of the day, our mission is simple: help people move better, feel better, and live better. Whether someone walks through our doors seeking pain relief or joins our Academy to build a new career, we want every person to leave stronger, healthier, and more empowered than when they arrived.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe the next five to ten years will be transformative for the stretch therapy industry. We’re already seeing people become more proactive about their health, mobility, and longevity rather than waiting until they’re in pain. I believe stretch therapy will become a mainstream part of that conversation, standing alongside massage therapy, chiropractic care, and physical therapy as a respected modality—not replacing them, but complementing them.

I also see more healthcare and wellness professionals, including massage therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and personal trainers, incorporating stretch therapy into their practices. As more research and education emerge, I believe physicians will begin recommending stretch therapy as part of treatment and preventative care plans for many musculoskeletal conditions.

At the same time, consumers are becoming more educated. They’re looking for alternatives that help them move better, age well, reduce pain, and improve their quality of life without relying solely on medication or surgery. I believe stretch therapy is uniquely positioned to meet that demand.

My hope is that The Stretch Loft continues to lead that movement. We’re not just building clinics—we’re building a profession. My vision is for The Stretch Loft to become a premier luxury wellness brand with an international presence while The Stretch Loft Academy helps train the next generation of highly skilled stretch practitioners around the world.
