Check Out Cheryl Laing’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Laing.

Hi Cheryl, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I discovered early on that food is more than nourishment—it’s a storyteller. Each kitchen has its secrets, each family their traditions, and through flavors and aromas, I learned how food both unites and distinguishes us.

As I’ve grown, so has my passion for exploring culinary traditions. It’s led me to travel, not just to see new places, but to taste their essence, to understand the stories woven into each dish. This journey has inspired Rooted En Flavor—a way to share the authentic flavors I’ve discovered, from the Spanish urban streets of Madrid to the beautiful coastline of Greece—a world hungry for connection and cultural understanding.

Through Rooted En Flavor, I hope to bring people closer through food, celebrating diversity, honoring artisans, and preserving traditions one delicious ingredient at a time. It’s not just about what we eat; it’s about the stories we share and the connections we create, one flavorful experience at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No! Bumps, mountains, hills, valleys, and more. The decision to develop a catering company and transition full-time was/is quite the hurdle. You constantly have to innovate; you constantly have to think of ways to sustain yourself and get through the slower seasons. Culinary creativity accounted for about 10% of the total effort to make the business successful, which was/ is a challenge.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Mediterranean cuisine as a bow to my time spent abroad. I love to eat it, and I love to cook it and push its limits. I love taking familiar tastes and bringing them to life with ingredients that you may not always consider. A perfect balance of spice, salt, and sweet to awaken your taste buds and take you on a journey.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Everything is hard; if it were easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing. To keep going, to push, and to keep moving forward is the only option.
