Meet Shai Sumpter of Aleras Table

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shai Sumpter.

Hi Shai, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to where I am today wasn’t a straight line, but looking back, every single step was entirely intentional. Before I was a chef, I was actually a numbers-crunching Accountant. I used to push through chronic stress, fatigue, and intense 3 PM brain fog, thinking it was just the price of a demanding corporate career. But my body eventually forced me to stop and listen. I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and pre-diabetes.

At the time, I was running my beloved business, ButterQueen Bakery. Realizing that I had to completely change my relationship with food to heal, I made the incredibly tough choice to close the bakery doors. I refused to rely just on medication, so I applied my analytical brain to the science of blood sugar balance. I partnered closely with nutritionists and registered dietitians to figure out how to get my health back on track.

But here was the catch: I love good food. I refuse to eat bland, restrictive “diet” food, and I knew other women felt the same way. So, I used my kitchen as a test lab. I took our deeply nostalgic, soulful family comfort recipes and structurally engineered them around metabolic science—pairing premium proteins and complex carbs with a specific 25-grams-per-day fiber threshold to act as a natural metabolic brake. I reversed my pre-diabetes in under six months and lost 15lbs in under 3 months entirely through food. That was the birth of Aleras Table. ‘Alera’ is Latin for “to nourish and support”, and that is exactly what we do. I knew I couldn’t keep this lifestyle blueprint to myself; I had to help other high-achieving professionals automate their health and reclaim their energy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I am a firm believer that God can and will use anything to His glory.

Right in the middle of navigating my health shifts and building my business blueprint, I was suddenly let go from my corporate day job. It completely propelled me into full-time entrepreneurship much sooner than I had originally planned! The truth is, God knew my heart—He knew I value stability and that I probably wouldn’t have walked away from a steady paycheck on my own to pursue this full-time.

Being let go wound up being one of the absolute best things that ever happened to me. It stripped away the safety net and forced me to step fully into my true calling. Navigating an unpredictable schedule, managing cash flow, and building a regional brand from scratch is a daily masterclass in resilience, but every hurdle has just made the foundation of Aleras Table that much stronger.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Aleras Table is a premium, specialized, therapeutic meal preparation and delivery service serving the Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region. We offer corporate and social catering, acting as the dedicated “better-for-you” wellness solution for high-performing professionals. We specialize in chef-crafted, macro-balanced meals engineered specifically to support blood sugar balance, hormone health, chronic fatigue, and steady insulin management.

We are best known for our concept of “clothing your carbs.” Every week, I design a fresh, rotating menu of 6–8 entrees using premium lean proteins like chicken, turkey, and seafood, alongside vibrant salads and specialty soups. We never sacrifice flavor; instead, we seamlessly blend global inspirations and Southern comfort nostalgia with precise metabolic metrics.

What completely sets us apart from generic, large-scale meal prep companies is how we solve dilemma of caretakers preparing multiple meal options. Through my client conversations, I realized that busy, health-conscious professionals are often forced to either cook separate therapeutic meals for themselves and comfort meals for their families, or sacrifice their own health goals to eat what the household wants. Aleras Table offers dual-format flexibility: you can order individual portions for your busy workdays and family-sized trays that feed the whole house with the exact same premium, blood-sugar-friendly food.

Brand-wise, I want readers to know that managing your health doesn’t have to feel like a restrictive chore. We hand-deliver fresh-made meals straight to your doorstep every week. We are here to act like a big sister helping you stay consistent.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I am incredibly blessed to say that I have a village behind me. I’ve had several phenomenal mentors across various industries who have guided me through every iteration and scaling stage of my business journey.

Specifically, Chef Renee has been absolutely paramount in my life. She continues guiding me through challenges I face while building a specialized meal prep and regional catering company. It has been true sisterhood at its absolute finest.

My friends have been the ultimate sounding board—tasting & testing my new macro-balanced creations, giving me honest feedback, and purchasing from me to help support the vision. And, of course, my family. The very soul of Aleras Table comes from 3 generations of recipes passed down to me, which I now get to pass forward to our community.

If you ever come to an Aleras Table pop-up experience in the DMV (like the 5 course tasting experience I hosted back in March), you will almost always see my mom right there working alongside me. She has been my number one cheerleader since the very beginning, all the way back to my very first high school business selling candy! The entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in my blood and stems directly from my family. As a third generation chef, I wouldn’t be here without them.
