Meet Natalie Amani Akins of Headline Hair Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Amani Akins.

Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My Journey to Opening Headline Hair Salon

I come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and my journey has been one of resilience and determination. After relocating to United States and I faced many challenges but always held onto the dream of owning my own hair salon.

In 2001, I met my husband, and shortly after, I became pregnant. This life-changing moment inspired me to pursue my passion for cosmetology. While I was pregnant, I enrolled in a cosmetology program, dedicating myself to my studies and completing the course in just a year.

After giving birth to my son, I was determined to make my dreams a reality. In 2008, with the unwavering support of my husband, I opened Headline Hair Salon. He promised to help me achieve this dream, and together we worked hard to bring it to life without relying on a bank loan.

From day one, I promised myself that I would work tirelessly to ensure the success of my salon. I am grateful for the support of my family and the community that has helped me along the way. Today, as I look back on this journey, I am proud to say that Headline Hair Salon is thriving, and I am committed to providing exceptional services to our clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After opening Headline, I faced numerous challenges, especially with maintaining a stable team of stylists. The turnover rate was a significant hurdle, but I refused to let it bring me down. I was determined to create a positive environment that would foster loyalty and growth within my team.
