Exploring Life & Business with Christine Kalu of Sound Mind Behavioral Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Kalu.

Hi Christine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Christine Kalu, and I’m a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. I truly believe every step of my journey led me to where I am today. My story can be summed up in one word…grace!

From a young age, I always knew I wanted to help people and work in healthcare. I began my nursing career in oncology and hospice care, where I developed a deep appreciation for the connection between the emotional and physical health. Witnessing how emotional struggles impacted patients naturally drew me toward psychiatry.

My passion for mental health also became personal when I faced and overcame my own struggles with anxiety, trauma, and depression, as well as seeing loved ones face similar challenges. Those experiences strengthened my empathy and deepened my desire to help others heal. I truly “get it” when I listen to my patients!

After my bachelors, I pursued a master’s degree, in psychiatric mental health, and I truly believe God guided me down that path because I was confused initially as to what to specialize in. During my training, I worked in a psychiatric hospital with children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. That experience confirmed to me that my calling was in mental health.

After a couple of years in practice and working for the foremost psychiatric centers in Maryland, I launched out to start Sound Mind Behavioral Health, a practice centered on compassion, healing, and care for the whole man. Inspired by the scripture in 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind,” my goal is to create a space where people feel seen, heard, supported, and empowered throughout their healing journey to regaining a sound mind.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was shifting from working as a nurse practitioner to becoming both a provider and business owner while building my own practice. Caring for patients always came naturally to me, but learning the business side of healthcare was a completely different experience.

Starting Sound Mind Behavioral Health taught me that running a practice involves much more than providing care. I had to learn insurance, billing, operations, and how to balance supporting my clients while also maintaining healthy boundaries. In the beginning, I was doing everything myself – I was the provider, scheduler, biller, and business owner which felt overwhelming at times. However, those challenges helped me grow tremendously and taught me resilience, balance, and the importance of trusting the process.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sound Mind Behavioral Health is a mental health practice focused on providing compassionate, individualized care for people struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, mood disorders, insomnia, and other mental health challenges. The practice was created to be a safe and supportive space where people can come, feel comfortable, and openly discuss what they’re experiencing without fear of judgment.

What sets the practice apart is our whole-person approach to care. I believe mental health treatment goes beyond medication management — it’s about truly understanding each person’s story, building trust, and creating a treatment plan that supports emotional wellness and long-term healing.

One thing I’m especially proud of is building a brand rooted in empathy, integrity, and authenticity. Mental health still carries stigma in many communities, and I wanted to create an environment where seeking help feels empowering rather than shameful. Our patient testimonials portray us as “thoughtful, culturally aware, and collaborative in their treatment journey”.
Above all, I want people to know they do not have to suffer in silence and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

At Sound Mind Behavioral Health, we belief that healing, hope, and emotional wellness is possible for everyone.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
The nature of my work as a mental health provider and practice owner often leads people to assume that I am an extrovert. In reality, I am naturally very reflective and introverted. I recharge by spending time with my family, watching movies, and enjoying moments of rest and self-care.

As a wife and mum of three boys, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is especially important to me. Much of my free time is spent with my husband and children, cheering my boys on at their sporting events and creating meaningful family memories. These moments keep me grounded and remind me of what matters most.
