Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Jackson.
Hi Morgan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my business during a season of my life where I was figuring out how to juggle single motherhood, being a full-time employee and student all while still providing for my family, physically and emotionally. I felt as though i was just surviving day by day, not really enjoying the moments in time with my friends and family that mattered the most. I realized after my third son that learning to take care of myself was just as important. As most parents can relate, we tend to put our own interests, hobbies, and needs on the back burner in order to make sure everyone else is taken care of first. As a single mom in Southern Maryland, I knew I wanted more than just getting by in survival mode— I wanted to build something meaningful for my family while still being present for my children. I’ve always loved creativity, hosting, and making things beautiful, So turning that passion into a business felt natural… even if it started a little chaotically at my kitchen table.
What began as a way to make some extra income quickly turned into something much bigger. I started taking small orders, pouring my heart into every dessert table and event setup, and saying “yes” to opportunities that pushed me outside my comfort zone. Somewhere between late-night prep, work meetings, school drop-offs, doctor’s appointments and learning everything through trial and error, my little business started growing through word-of-mouth and community support.
Today, I’m proud to say this business represents so much more than desserts and events. It represents resilience, growth, and a mom who refused to let hard seasons stop her from building the life she wanted for herself and her babies. Every event I create is personal to me because I know how important life’s celebrations are, big or small. Watching something that started as a survival plan turn into a thriving business has honestly been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a business is never truly a “smooth road,” I feel like — there are always going to be challenges, ups and downs, and so much learning to do. As a single mom building a business from the ground up, there were definitely moments of exhaustion, self doubt, and countless “am I even good at this?” thoughts.
This business isn’t just a cookie cutter boxed cake from the Walmart Bakery section. It’s filled with late nights prepping for events, markets, parties, weddings, etc., spending hours marketing, creating quotes and contracts, and most importantly communicating with customers in order to give them the best, most authentic, and hands-off experience as possible. Every detail is heard, confirmed, and executed with care with Mama Moe’s in order to make that special gift, party, wedding, anniversary, baby shower, first birthday — whatever event it may be — the sweetest memory!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I love most about my business is that I truly get to be creative in so many different ways. I do a little bit of everything — custom cakes, cupcakes, chocolate dipped treats, cake pops, dessert tables, and more — and I honestly enjoy being able to bring people’s visions to life for all of their special moments. No two orders are ever exactly the same, and I think that’s what keeps it exciting for me. Whether it’s an elegant wedding setup, a fun birthday theme, or a simple “just because” treat box, I put the same level of care and detail into every order.
I think what people know Mama Moe’s for most is not just the desserts themselves, but the experience and love behind them. I’m very hands-on with my customers because I know these events matter. I want people to feel heard, excited, and stress-free throughout the process. Anybody can make sweets, but creating something personal and memorable for someone is what really matters to me.
What I’m most proud of is building a business that feels genuine. Everything behind Mama Moe’s was built through hard work, word-of-mouth, repeat customers, and people trusting me with some of their sweetest life moments. I’m proud that customers come back not only because they loved the desserts, but because they felt cared for throughout the entire experience.
I also think what sets me apart is that I don’t believe in “one size fits all” work. I’m constantly learning, growing, and challenging myself creatively. I care deeply about quality, communication, and making sure every order feels special — because to my customers, it is special. And honestly, being able to combine creativity, motherhood, and entrepreneurship into something that brings joy to other people is something I’ll never take for granted.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For me, finding mentorship and building a network didn’t really come from a formal place — it came from life pushing me into it in the best way.
As a parent, especially in the early stages, it can feel like your entire identity becomes wrapped up in motherhood. For a while, that was all I felt like I was. But starting this business gently pulled me back into the world in a different way. It placed me in rooms, conversations, and community spaces I wouldn’t have otherwise stepped into, and honestly, it helped me rediscover myself outside of just being a mom.
Through my business, I’ve been able to connect with other small business owners, local vendors, and people in my community who are doing incredible things. Those relationships have naturally turned into friendships, mentorships, and learning experiences that I didn’t even realize I needed at the time.
My biggest piece of advice when it comes to networking is to stop looking at others in your industry as competition. Instead, look at them as resources. There is so much to learn from people who are doing similar work to you, and there is also so much value in sharing your own knowledge and experiences in return. So be open and be willing to share! There will ALWAYS be something new to learn!
