Exploring Life & Business with Kavita Sahai of DMV Sip & Swap, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kavita Sahai.

Hi Kavita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Fashion. Sustainability. Philanthropy.

By profession, I am an attorney dedicated to public service within the Federal Government. At heart, however, I am a fashionista driven by creative expression. My legal journey began with a definitive spark: a tenth-grade field trip to the Supreme Court. That early passion fueled a laser-focused path through my undergraduate studies at UMBC and on to the University of Maryland School of Law.

Yet, as my legal career flourished, I realized a vital piece of myself was sitting on the sidelines—my creative side. I have always been deeply drawn to the artistry of fashion, whether it was analyzing red carpet looks, following Project Runway (championing fellow Marylander Christian Siriano!), or curating the perfect outfit.

As time went on, the rise of social media and explosion of the fast fashion industry fundamentally shifted how we view our wardrobes. We are currently facing a massive global waste crisis driven by the fast fashion model. The digital pressure to constantly display new trends and avoid outfit repeating on social platforms created a culture where our closets became overcrowded, yet we shared less.

The true turning point came when I became a mother. During late nights scrolling through Instagram waiting for my children to fall asleep, I found myself admiring the distinct personal style of friends and influencers in the DMV area. It struck me just how many incredible, high-quality garments were sitting dormant in closets, likely only worn once or twice. Growing up with a younger sister and a close-knit circle of cousins, swapping clothes and passing down beloved pieces was simply second nature, and also inspired a sense of community and closeness.

That was the catalyst for DMV Sip & Swap. I asked myself: What if, instead of swapping clothes with just one sister or friend, you could exchange wardrobes with fifty style-conscious women simultaneously? What if we could give beautiful cocktail dresses, designer accessories, and unique garments a second life? And what if we could expand the platform to fill a culture gap in swapping South Asian attire?

In April 2024, I hosted our inaugural event in North Bethesda, Maryland. It brought together local fashion lovers to exchange curated style pieces while building community over small bites and drinks. Today, nothing brings me more joy than seeing our community tag @dmvsipandswap in photos where they are proudly rocking a unique, sustainable find. Clothing is simply what you buy; style is the life you breathe into it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While the concept of the DMV Sip & Swap lived in my head for months, my greatest initial hurdle was overcoming the feeling of vulnerability. Would people actually show up? Was there still a lingering stigma around secondhand wardrobe sharing? Turning 40 brought a beautiful shift in perspective—I began embracing a mindset of absolute authenticity, worrying less about external judgment and focusing entirely on execution. I made peace with the idea that even if the event ended up being just me and a few close friends sharing a bottle of Prosecco and trading clothes, it would still be a success.

Once I committed, the next challenge was purely operational: logistics. How could we manage quality control, ensure inclusive sizing, and make the drop-off process effortless for busy professionals?

To solve this, I mobilized four brilliant close friends who became my “Sip & Swap Coordinators.” To maximize convenience, we established drop-off hubs across Montgomery County, Howard County, and Northern Virginia weeks ahead of the event. We set rigorous standards—items had to be pristine, contemporary, and gently worn—and we hand-inspected every single piece. To ensure inclusivity, we expanded beyond clothing to include premium accessories like handbags, jewelry, and belts, meaning every attendee left with something beautiful that fit perfectly. We even invited local tailors to the venue to offer on-site consultations regarding alterations and resizing, which proved invaluable for formal wear and intricate South Asian attire.

Currently, my main creative challenge is ensuring that each event remains fresh, dynamic, and forward-thinking. As popularity has grown, the event has allowed for us to create a space for local vendors and support small businesses in the DMV. We are constantly evolving our themes to keep our community engaged, and I am thrilled to be announcing our highly anticipated Fall 2026 theme on our Instagram account @dmvsipandswap in the coming weeks.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Every DMV Sip & Swap is designed to blend luxury, convenience, and community. Each attendee contributes five high-quality, pre-loved garments or accessories and selects five new-to-them pieces to take home. The admission ticket provides an elevated social experience complete with complimentary drinks, curated small bites, a chance to shop local businesses, and networking opportunities with regional fashionistas and digital creators.

But beyond the fashion, the heartbeat of DMV Sip & Swap is rooted in environmental sustainability and philanthropy. By championing a circular fashion economy right here in Maryland, we are actively pushing back against the “buy and throw away” cycle that defines the modern apparel industry. We prove that you can love fashion and refresh your wardrobe without contributing to the landfill waste caused by mass production.

I believe we also carry a parallel responsibility to uplift others. To honor that, a portion of all ticket proceeds is directly donated to local charitable causes. For our past events, we proudly supported Ashiyanaa, a remarkable regional non-profit that my family and I have passionately volunteered with for many years. It continues to do incredible work in our community, empowering South Asians to lead lives free of interpersonal violence by providing vital, culturally sensitive support services.

Our scope has beautifully expanded with every iteration. We have grown from featuring contemporary Western fashion to introducing dedicated South Asian clothing exchanges and children’s collections. We also utilize our platform to champion local commerce, spotlighting female-led and South Asian-owned small businesses from the DMV area who showcase everything from fine jewelry and bespoke handbags to artwork and beauty treatments.

DMV Sip and Swap started as a question I asked myself late one night. It has grown into a community I am genuinely proud of – one where fashion, sustainability, and philanthropy don’t just coexist—they thrive together.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My journey into leadership and creative expression truly began in my teens when I was selected as one of forty youth across Montgomery County to participate in Model Citizen: Role Models Who Model. Sponsored by the Montgomery County Youth Advisory Committee, this unique initiative was meticulously designed to cultivate self-esteem, poise, and leadership in young adults.

Over seven weeks, we underwent intensive professional development and confidence-building training led by the Model Citizens Production Company. For me, the experience was doubly transformative: it provided my first real behind-the-scenes exposure to the fashion industry, ultimately cultivating a lifelong love of style and design.

The program culminated in a high-profile, community-wide fashion showcase hosted at a local high school, featuring apparel curated by premier brands and major department stores. Beyond the personal growth and creative inspiration it fostered, the event was deeply rooted in philanthropy. Admission was tied to a canned food drive that directly benefited local shelters, reinforcing a vital lesson I carry with me to this day: the powerful connection between personal empowerment, creative expression, and civic responsibility.
