Today we’d like to introduce you to Kindra Bullock.
Hi Kindra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Entrepreneurship has always been a part of who I am. After high school, I started trying different businesses, and one thing I always realized was that I loved creating. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, using my imagination, and bringing ideas to life.
One of the businesses I started was a baking company called *Sweet As Honey Cakes*. I loved it, and honestly, I was pretty good at it. But life happened. At that time, I just didn’t have the bandwidth to fully focus on building the business while also handling the responsibilities of everyday life. My professional career was beginning to take off, and I had bills to pay, so I put more of my energy there.
I don’t regret that decision because my career taught me a lot. It helped shape me, develop me, and gave me experiences that I still use today. Of course, there are moments when I wonder what would have happened if I had poured all of my energy into entrepreneurship from the beginning, but even while I was building my corporate career, I was always starting something, creating something, or exploring a business idea. Entrepreneurship has never really left me. It’s just part of who I am.
In 2021, I remember spending some time in prayer and asking God what He wanted me to get back to doing. Over the years, life and different circumstances had pulled me away from some of the things I loved, and I felt like I needed direction.
What’s funny is that one of the confirmations came almost immediately. Right after I finished praying, my best friend sent me a text asking if I could make cupcakes for her. We hadn’t talked about me baking in years. And, she had no idea what I had just prayed about. I remember sitting there thinking, “Okay, God, I hear You.”
So I started baking again.
The interesting thing is that I didn’t really have a plan. I had no idea about where it would lead or what the end goal was. I just knew I needed to start.
As I got back into that creative space, I started exploring different things and came across charcuterie. What initially attracted me to it was actually pretty simple: it reminded me of Lunchables. I loved Lunchables as a kid, and charcuterie felt like the grown-up version. The only difference was that instead of a juice box, I could pair it with a glass of wine. That part still makes me laugh.
But once I started practicing and creating boards, I realized it was so much more than meat and cheese on a board. It was art.
I found myself paying attention to colors, placement, and presentation. I wasn’t just throwing cheese, fruit, and meat together. I was thinking about how everything looked together. I would literally stand there deciding which shade of grapes worked best with the rest of the board because I wanted the colors to complement one another.
The more I learned about pairings, flavors, and presentation, the more I fell in love with it. It gave me another creative outlet, and I realized that charcuterie allowed me to combine food and art in a way that felt really natural to me.
What started as something I thought I’d simply add to my business eventually became a major part of it.
Today, I love that I don’t have to choose between desserts and charcuterie. I get to do both. I enjoy creating beautiful charcuterie displays, and I also enjoy creating desserts that bring people joy. As I expanded into charcuterie bars and later introduced cake bars, I started seeing how the two could work together.
One of the biggest lessons has been learning how to build both sides of the business while finding a balance between them. It’s been a process, but it’s also been exciting because both allow me to express different parts of my creativity.
At the end of the day, that’s really what this journey has been about for me. returning to something I love, trusting the process even when I didn’t have all the answers, and creating experiences that allow people to gather, celebrate, and enjoy life together.
I’m continuing to grow, and there’s so much more to come as I keep developing my passions. Definitely more is coming from me, even in the very near future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely, there have been challenges and obstacles. I often say that entrepreneurship is so ghetto because it can really get hard at times.
The challenges can take you out if you don’t stay in prayer. One thing I’ve had to learn is that my spiritual relationship with God plays a big role in my business. And the challenges you face won’t just test your ability to complete a task or push through an obstacle; they’re going to test you.
They’re going to test your character, your leadership, your work ethic, how you handle situations, etc. It tests so much of who you are as a person.
As you’re learning how to run a business, there are a lot of things about yourself that you have to learn and sometimes unlearn. Trying to navigate all of that at the same time can be really, really tough. I find myself in prayer a lot.
But it’s worth it when you get to the other side. Every obstacle has taught me something, strengthened me in some way, and prepared me for the next level.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Continuing to follow the path and simply take the next step, even when I didn’t know where it was going to lead, is honestly how my career grew as well.
I can honestly tell you that I never would have thought I would end up in Human Resources and actually build a career there. It wasn’t my first choice. Not because it was a bad choice; it just wasn’t what I had originally envisioned for myself.
I started as a Data Steward and eventually touched almost every facet of HR, from benefits and employee relations to employee engagement, training and development, and project management.
One thing I didn’t realize at first was how much creativity played a role in everything I did. Looking back, I’ve always used creativity in my work. It’s influenced how I approached problems, how I connected with people, and how I got things done.
There’s a saying that you get it from your mama, and that’s literally true for me. Honestly, I got it from both my mom and dad. They’re both creatives, and it’s so embedded in who I am that no matter what I’m doing, my creativity always finds its way into it.
The part of HR that I enjoyed the most was employee engagement. What’s so interesting is that it’s something I still use in my business today.
Once I really understood the importance of employee morale, team building, and engagement, and had the opportunity to support organizations in those areas, it changed the way I looked at experiences and events. It became one of the parts of my career that I enjoyed most.
Present day, when I think about creating an experience for a company/client, I automatically think about the engagement piece. How will this bring employees/guests together? How will this impact morale? How will it help solve a problem for the business or client? And what the overall experience will be for them.
Your employees are your most valuable asset, and when people feel connected, appreciated, and engaged, it makes a difference.
That’s why I love seeing the full-circle moment of it all. The path I took in building my professional career wasn’t what I expected, but now I’m able to take those experiences and apply them directly to my business. The skills, knowledge, and perspective I gained along the way have become valuable tools that I use every day.
It’s another reason why I don’t regret focusing on my career during that season of my life. Looking back, I can see how every step was preparing me for what I’m doing now.
How do you think about luck?
To be honest with you, I don’t believe in luck.
Without a shadow of a doubt, I know that everything in my life and my business is God’s hand. It’s His favor, His grace, His mercy. It plays a role in everything.
There have been great things that have happened, and there have been things that didn’t feel so great at the time. But what I love is that I’ve seen God use all of it for my good. Even when it didn’t feel good, and even when I didn’t understand what was happening, I’ve been able to look back and see Him working things out for me.
I’m so grateful for that.
What’s funny is that I’ve had several situations where I knew it was God’s favor because I couldn’t explain it any other way. I couldn’t explain how certain doors opened, how certain opportunities came together, or how certain situations worked out. It was simply God’s favor and grace.
His grace has blessed me through all of this time. It’s kept me through all of this time, and honestly, it’s still what’s keeping me going today.
So, no, I can’t say it’s luck. I know exactly Who has been carrying me every step of the way.
