Exploring Life & Business with Edward Nwaze of SAFE Hands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Nwaze.

Hi Edward, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey to where I am today has been anything but traditional.

I began my career in healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant and later became a Registered Nurse. Over the years, I continued my education, earning advanced nursing credentials and ultimately obtaining a Doctorate in Nursing. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to lifelong learning and professional growth. Today, I am also pursuing a degree in Medicine on the path to becoming a Medical Doctor, further expanding my ability to serve patients and communities through healthcare.

Throughout my years working in healthcare, I saw firsthand how many families struggled to find dependable, compassionate care for their loved ones. Too often, people were treated as tasks rather than individuals, and I knew there had to be a better way.

At the same time, my life has been shaped by service, faith, and a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Whether through healthcare, ministry, or community involvement, I have always been passionate about helping people navigate some of the most challenging seasons of their lives.

That passion eventually led me to establish SAFE Hands Maryland. The vision was simple: create a home care agency that treats every client like family and every caregiver like a valued member of the team. We wanted to build an organization where compassion, professionalism, dignity, and reliability were not just words on a website but values demonstrated every day.

Like many entrepreneurs, the journey came with challenges. Building a healthcare company requires navigating regulations, staffing shortages, operational hurdles, and the everyday realities of running a business. There were moments that tested my resilience, but each challenge strengthened my commitment to the mission.

Today, SAFE Hands Maryland provides non-medical home care and healthcare staffing services to families, assisted living communities, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and healthcare organizations throughout Maryland. We help seniors maintain their independence, support families during difficult transitions, and connect healthcare facilities with qualified caregivers who genuinely care about the people they serve.

In addition to operating SAFE Hands Maryland, I continue to advance my medical education and healthcare expertise. My goal has always been bigger than building a company. It is about creating opportunities, improving lives, advancing healthcare, and leaving a lasting impact on the communities we serve.

Looking back, I am grateful for every lesson, every challenge, and every person who trusted us with their care. SAFE Hands Maryland was built on the belief that quality care can change lives, and that belief continues to guide everything we do today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. Like most entrepreneurs, especially in healthcare, the road has been filled with challenges, setbacks, and lessons that you cannot learn from a textbook.

One of the biggest challenges was building trust and credibility in an industry where families are entrusting you with the care of their loved ones. In healthcare, reputation is everything, and earning that trust takes time, consistency, and a commitment to excellence every single day.

Another challenge was balancing multiple responsibilities at once. While growing SAFE Hands Maryland, SAFE Hands Montgomery, and SAFE Hands Michigan, I was also continuing my education, advancing my nursing career, serving in ministry, raising a family, and pursuing my medical degree. There were many late nights, early mornings, and moments when giving up would have been the easier option.

Staffing has also been one of the most difficult aspects of operating a healthcare company. Finding caregivers who are not only qualified but also genuinely compassionate and committed to serving others can be challenging. Healthcare is ultimately about people, and building a team that shares your values takes patience and intentionality.

Like many business owners, I have also experienced financial pressures, operational hurdles, regulatory requirements, and the unexpected challenges that come with running and growing an organization. There were times when resources were limited, opportunities did not work out as planned, or difficult decisions had to be made for the long-term health of the business.

However, every challenge taught me something valuable. The obstacles strengthened my resilience, improved my leadership, and reinforced the importance of adaptability. Rather than viewing setbacks as failures, I learned to see them as opportunities to grow and improve.

What kept me moving forward was remembering why I started. Every time a family expressed gratitude for the care their loved one received, every time a client was able to remain safely at home, and every time a caregiver found meaningful employment through our agency, it reminded me that the work we do truly matters.

Looking back, I wouldn’t describe the journey as smooth, but I would describe it as worthwhile. The challenges shaped me into a better leader, healthcare professional, and entrepreneur, and they continue to inspire SAFE Hands Maryland’s mission today.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SAFE Hands Maryland was founded with a simple but powerful mission: to provide compassionate, dependable, and dignified care that allows individuals to remain safe, comfortable, and independent wherever they call home. We call it the CARE EFFECT

We are a licensed home care and healthcare staffing agency serving families, healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, assisted living communities, and hospitals throughout Maryland. Our services include personal care assistance, companionship, respite care, dementia support, post-hospitalization support, and healthcare staffing solutions for facilities in need of qualified caregivers and healthcare professionals.

What sets us apart is that we were built by healthcare professionals who understand both sides of care. As a Registered Nurse with a Doctorate in Nursing and a medical student pursuing a degree in Medicine, I have personally witnessed the challenges families face when searching for trustworthy care. We understand that clients are not simply cases or schedules; they are individuals with unique stories, needs, and goals. That perspective influences every decision we make.

One of the things we are most known for is our commitment to treating every client like family. We focus heavily on matching caregivers with clients based not only on skills and qualifications but also on personality, compatibility, and the specific needs of the individual receiving care. We believe that great care goes beyond tasks; it is about building relationships, preserving dignity, and creating peace of mind for families.

Another area that makes us different is our emphasis on workforce development. We invest in training, accountability, and continuous support for our caregivers because we believe that exceptional care begins with exceptional caregivers. When our team feels valued, supported, and equipped to succeed, our clients benefit from a higher standard of service.

As a brand, what I am most proud of is the trust we have earned. Many of our clients come to us during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives, after a hospitalization, during a health crisis, or while caring for an aging loved one. Being entrusted with that responsibility is something we never take for granted.

At SAFE Hands Maryland, we are not simply providing care; we are providing reassurance, support, and hope to families navigating difficult situations. Our goal is to be more than a service provider; we strive to be a trusted partner in care.

If there is one thing I would like readers to know about our brand, it is that our name reflects our promise. SAFE Hands means that every client, family member, and healthcare partner can expect professionalism, compassion, integrity, and a genuine commitment to improving lives. Everything we do is centered around that promise.

How do you think about luck?
I have learned over the years that what many people call “luck” is often the result of preparation, persistence, faith, and being willing to keep moving forward when things are difficult.

That said, both good fortune and unexpected challenges have certainly played a role in my journey.

There have been moments where the right person came into my life at the right time, opportunities appeared when I least expected them, or a conversation opened a door that changed the trajectory of my business. I am grateful for those moments. However, I have also learned that opportunities only become meaningful if you are prepared to take advantage of them when they arrive.

On the other hand, there have been setbacks that some might consider bad luck. Like many entrepreneurs, I have faced financial challenges, staffing shortages, unexpected obstacles, difficult business decisions, and personal hardships while trying to build a company. There were times when plans did not work out, contracts fell through, or circumstances forced me to pivot and find a different path forward.

Looking back, some of what felt like bad luck at the time actually became some of my greatest lessons. Those experiences taught me resilience, patience, adaptability, and the importance of staying committed to a vision even when progress feels slow.

One thing I often tell people is that success rarely happens overnight. Most people see the finished product, but they do not see the sacrifices, setbacks, and perseverance that happened behind the scenes. Every challenge helped shape the leader, healthcare professional, and entrepreneur I am today.

Ultimately, I do not attribute my journey solely to luck. I believe success comes from a combination of hard work, faith, preparation, relationships, and the willingness to keep showing up even when things do not go according to plan. If there has been any “good luck” in my life, it has been finding purpose in serving others and being surrounded by people who believed in the mission of what we were building.

The biggest lesson I have learned is that sometimes life’s greatest blessings arrive disguised as obstacles. Some of the doors that closed ultimately led me to opportunities that were far greater than I could have imagined at the time.
