Today we’d like to introduce you to Tolu Keys.

Hi Tolu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started baking from home out of passion, using quality ingredients to create cakes that not only looked elegant but also tasted amazing. After experiencing disappointing cakes myself that looked good but weren’t enjoyable to eat, I wanted to create something better. As a self-taught baker, I started with a few customers, and through repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals, the business continued to grow. Today, we’ve expanded from a home bakery to our storefront in Catonsville, Maryland.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges was starting as a self-taught baker and learning through trial and error while building the business. Managing growth was also a challenge—balancing baking, customer service, orders, and operations, especially while working from home. Another challenge was building trust and standing out in a competitive market, but consistently delivering quality cakes and excellent customer service helped us grow through repeat customers and referrals. Expanding from a home business to a storefront also came with financial and operational challenges, but it has been a rewarding journey.

Cedars Cakes specializes in custom celebration cakes, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and specialty desserts, creating elegant, high-quality designs tailored to each client’s vision.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The bakery and custom cake industry has a positive outlook, with continued demand for celebration cakes, custom desserts, and specialty options like vegan and dietary-friendly products. Consumers increasingly value quality, unique designs, and personalized experiences for birthdays, weddings, and events. Social media also continues to drive demand for visually appealing custom cakes. While challenges such as rising ingredient costs and competition remain, there are strong opportunities for growth through innovation, online ordering, catering, and specialty offerings
