Meet Quadir Yussuf of Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quadir Yussuf.

Hi Quadir , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
TheCapableMC honestly started by accident during the pandemic while I was finishing my senior year of college. At the time, I was a Biology pre-med major preparing to take the MCAT, and entertainment was never something I viewed as a realistic career path. Even though I had always been the funny, talkative kid growing up, comedy was just something people associated with my personality — not something I imagined could become my profession.

Out of boredom during the pandemic, I randomly posted my first funny video on Instagram from my room, and to my surprise it went locally viral. I remember being genuinely confused by the reaction because the video felt so effortless to make. Meanwhile, people were reposting it, quoting it, and showing so much excitement over a simple one-minute clip. That moment opened my eyes to the fact that maybe this talent I naturally had could actually connect with people on a larger scale.

From there, I started creating more content and quickly realized I had ideas and stories that couldn’t fully be expressed through short skits alone. A lot of my humor felt better suited for live performance and storytelling. That curiosity led me to search for local comedy clubs and open mics, and eventually I performed my very first stand-up set. From the moment I touched the stage, I was hooked.

The microphone instantly felt natural to me — almost like my favorite toy to wield. The best way I can describe it is that I feel like a magician on stage and the microphone becomes my magic wand. Performing gave me a feeling I had never experienced anywhere else. It combined storytelling, energy, timing, crowd connection, and creativity all in one space.

As I continued performing stand-up and growing online, people slowly started reaching out asking me to host and MC events. That’s really where TheCapableMC journey began. What started as accidental comedy content during the pandemic evolved into building a brand centered around live entertainment, crowd engagement, hosting, and creating unforgettable experiences for audiences. Today, I’ve had the opportunity to perform stand-up at major venues, host countless events, and continue growing both as a comedian and as TheCapableMC — and it still feels like I’m only getting started.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think the challenges are a huge part of what shaped me into who I am today.

One of the biggest struggles early on was simply not knowing what I was doing. I entered comedy and entertainment completely by accident with no roadmap, no industry connections, and honestly no understanding of how difficult the business side of entertainment could be. I was learning everything in real time while also trying to figure myself out as a young adult.

Another challenge was balancing expectations — both internal and external. I came from a pre-med Biology background where the career path was very structured and traditional. Comedy and hosting felt uncertain, risky, and unconventional. There were moments where I questioned whether I was making the right decision pursuing entertainment seriously, especially because success in this field is rarely immediate or guaranteed.

I also had to learn professionalism the hard way. Early in my journey, I was very hungry and ambitious, but sometimes I moved too fast or approached opportunities before fully earning them. Looking back now, I can admit there were moments where immaturity and impatience created setbacks for me professionally. At the time those moments felt discouraging, but in hindsight they became some of my greatest lessons in humility, patience, timing, and relationship-building.

Financially, entertainment can also be very unpredictable. There are seasons where opportunities are flowing and seasons where you feel like nothing is moving. I’ve had to invest heavily into myself, my content, my equipment, my travel, and my craft long before seeing consistent returns. That requires a lot of faith and discipline behind the scenes that people don’t always see online.

I think another underrated challenge is simply the mental side of performing. Stand-up comedy teaches you how to handle rejection publicly. Some nights are amazing and some nights you bomb in front of strangers and still have to get back on stage the next day. That process builds resilience very quickly.

But through all of it, every setback pushed me to grow. The struggles forced me to become more disciplined, more professional, more self-aware, and more intentional about the type of entertainer and person I want to be. I genuinely believe the obstacles made TheCapableMC brand stronger because they taught me how to connect with people authentically instead of trying to force success overnight.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work sits at the intersection of live event hosting and stand-up comedy. As TheCapableMC, I specialize in MCing and hosting a wide range of events where energy, crowd connection, and timing are everything — including birthdays, weddings, graduations, baby dedications, galas, college shows, cultural events, comedy shows, and other live entertainment experiences. My role is to make sure the audience is not just watching an event, but actually engaged in it from start to finish.

What I’m most known for is my ability to read a room quickly and shift the energy in real time. Every crowd is different, so I focus on adapting my delivery, humor, and interaction style to fit the moment. Whether it’s hyping up a crowd, bridging transitions between performers, or improvising off audience reactions, I treat hosting as a live performance art, not just announcements between segments.

Stand-up comedy plays a huge role in my approach as well. It sharpened my storytelling, timing, and ability to think on my feet. That foundation allows me to bring a comedic edge to my hosting without taking away from the professionalism of the event. I like to describe it as structured chaos — everything is intentional, but it feels natural and effortless to the audience.

What I’m most proud of is the growth from doing everything independently — from performing my first open mics, to building a name in both comedy and hosting, to eventually getting opportunities to perform on bigger stages and open for established comedians. I’m also proud of the cultural bridge my work creates, especially blending my Nigerian-American background with mainstream audiences in a way that feels relatable and authentic.

What sets me apart is that I don’t treat MCing as background work. I treat it as the heartbeat of the event. My goal is always to elevate the entire experience, not just fill time. I bring a mix of comedy, structure, adaptability, and genuine audience connection that turns a regular event into something memorable.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is God and family.

At the end of the day, everything I do — comedy, hosting, building TheCapableMC — only makes sense if my relationship with my creator is right and my family is okay. That’s my foundation. If those two things are in place, I feel grounded enough to show up as the best version of myself in any room I step into.

A lot of people get caught up chasing success, recognition, or opportunities, and I’ve learned those things can change quickly. What doesn’t change for me is faith and family. That’s where my peace and perspective come from, especially in an industry that can be unpredictable.

Because I’m anchored in that, I’m able to focus on what I believe I’m here to do — which is to impact people through entertainment, whether that’s making a room laugh, hosting an event, or creating moments people remember long after the night is over.
