Today we’d like to introduce you to William Allen.
Hi William, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in construction started early by working with my father from middle school into adulthood. I spent years helping him on jobs after school, during summers, and eventually after high school. Later, my father, my brother, and I worked together as partners, which gave me hands on experience in construction, remodeling, repairs, and customer service.
From 2011 to 2021, I worked with Fulcrum International, where we completed government and commercial installations throughout the DMV area, while I continued building my own business on the side. In 2021, I left to complete what was supposed to be a one month government project at Arlington National Cemetery, but my business took off and I never returned.
Since then, I have continued growing Allen’s General Services throughout the DMV area. In 2025, I worked on a project at Fort Meade, and on June 1, 2026, I will begin my third government project at Fort Myer. My long term goal is to grow Allen’s General Services into a prime government contractor while continuing to expand residential and commercial services.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest lessons I learned early was how seasonal the construction industry can be. In 2021, during my first year fully focused on my business, I did not experience the normal winter slowdown because I was working on a government project at Arlington National Cemetery from October through November.
Right after that project ended, I partnered with Aramark and RESCare, helping complete repairs and remodeling work for over 40 special needs residential homes they managed. That opportunity helped keep the business moving during what is normally a slow season and taught me the importance of building strong relationships and multiple income sources.
Now I understand the seasonal side of the industry much better and know that winters can slow down for contractors. Like many small business owners, I have also faced challenges with cash flow, staffing, long hours, and balancing business growth with personal responsibilities, but those experiences helped me become more adaptable and focused on long term growth.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Allen’s General Services is a residential and commercial contracting company based in the DMV area specializing in remodeling, repairs, maintenance, flooring, drywall, painting, installations, and general construction services. We are known for being dependable, versatile, and willing to solve difficult problems that many contractors avoid.
What sets us apart is our wide range of hands on experience, from residential repairs to commercial and government related projects, including work completed at Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Meade, and Fort Myer. I take pride in building strong customer relationships, doing quality work, and continuing to grow the company into a long term business that can create opportunities for others and generational success for my family.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like most about this area is the diversity, opportunity, and the relationships you can build through business and community. The DMV area has allowed me to work with many different people and continue growing my company.
What I like least is probably the traffic and how competitive and expensive the area can be, especially for small business owners trying to grow and stay consistent year round.
