Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayon Graham.
Hi Kayon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Jamaica, where I grew up in a large and close-knit family – one brother, four sisters, and an extended family that has always been a strong part of my life. I moved to New Jersey as a teenager and eventually relocated to Maryland, where I live today. I earned my bachelor’s degree in accounting from Rutgers University, followed by a master’s degree in accounting and information systems from the University of Maryland Global Campus, where I am also currently completing my MBA.
Professionally, I’ve spent more than 14 years working in accounting, auditing, compliance, cost analysis, and financial oversight. Much of that experience has involved working with organizations that receive federal funding or operate under complex regulatory requirements. Over time, I developed specialized expertise in federal grant and contract compliance, indirect cost rates, internal controls, audit readiness, and risk-based financial reviews; giving me a strong understanding of both the technical side of accounting and the practical challenges organizations face when trying to stay financially organized and compliant.
Through that work, I noticed a consistent gap: smaller organizations often lacked access to the level of financial guidance and compliance support that larger ones take for granted. Many business owners were overwhelmed trying to manage bookkeeping, taxes, payroll, reporting requirements, and operational growth all at once. I saw an opportunity to build a firm that combined traditional accounting services with higher-level advisory and compliance support in a way that felt approachable and practical for growing businesses and nonprofits.
That realization led me to launch K. Graham Accounting & Advisory, LLC, a compliance-focused accounting and advisory firm serving individuals, small businesses, nonprofits, government contractors, and federally funded organizations throughout the DMV area. Before going public, I spent considerable time planning, refining my niche, building systems, and thinking carefully about how I wanted the firm to be positioned. I wanted it built on a solid foundation, not rushed growth.
Today, my firm provides bookkeeping, accounting, tax preparation, financial reporting, payroll support, audit readiness, internal controls advisory, and federal grant and contract compliance services. I especially enjoy helping clients build audit-ready financial systems and helping them understand the story their financials are telling — so they can make stronger decisions with confidence.
I’m still actively growing the business, building relationships, and becoming more involved in local entrepreneurial communities. I’ve been intentional about networking through organizations like the Maryland Black Chamber of Commerce and connecting with professionals who value collaboration and long-term growth. My approach has always been steady and relationship-focused: provide quality work, build trust, and grow thoughtfully.
At the core of everything I do is a simple belief: strong financial foundations give people and organizations the ability to grow sustainably, reduce risk, and focus more confidently on their goals and mission.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs building service-based businesses from the ground up, there have been challenges at nearly every stage of the journey.
One of the biggest has been building visibility in a highly competitive industry. Accounting is a field where trust is everything and trust takes time to build. Even with years of professional experience behind me, starting a business means establishing your own reputation from scratch, building relationships, marketing yourself consistently, and learning how to communicate your value clearly. That process can be humbling, and it requires a lot of persistence.
Another challenge has been balance. While growing the firm, I have also continued advancing my education through my MBA program alongside the responsibilities of an active professional life. Entrepreneurship often looks exciting from the outside, but behind the scenes it involves long hours, uncertainty, real financial investment, and constantly learning how to wear multiple hats at once.
I also quickly learned that technical expertise alone does not build a successful business. I came into entrepreneurship with strong accounting, compliance, and audit experience — but running a business also requires marketing, networking, sales, branding, and the confidence to put yourself out there publicly. Those were areas that pushed me well outside my comfort zone and forced me to grow personally, not just professionally.
There have been moments of discouragement, particularly during slower periods when outreach did not immediately translate into clients or opportunities. Building something takes patience, consistency, and resilience, and progress often comes slower than you expect. What I’ve come to understand is that steady growth is still growth.
Those struggles have also shaped how I show up for my clients. Because I understand the pressures business owners face, I try to approach my work with empathy, practicality, and transparency. I know that behind every financial statement is a person trying to build something meaningful, manage uncertainty, and create stability for themselves and the people who depend on them.
Every challenge along the way has made me more intentional, more resilient, and more committed to building a firm that provides real value and long-term support to the clients and communities I serve.

While we provide traditional accounting services such as bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, payroll support, and tax preparation, our goal is to help organizations build strong financial foundations that are organized, compliant, and audit ready.
What sets us apart is the combination of hands-on accounting support with deep compliance and regulatory experience. My professional background spans more than 14 years in accounting, auditing, cost analysis, federal compliance, and financial oversight — including work involving federal grants, contracts, indirect cost rates, internal controls, and risk-based financial reviews. That experience allows me to help clients manage their day-to-day finances while also navigating more complex financial and compliance requirements with confidence.
Many small businesses and nonprofits eventually reach a point where they need more than basic bookkeeping. They may be pursuing grants, preparing for an audit, managing government funding, or working to strengthen internal financial processes. That is where our firm provides the most value. We help clients improve financial reporting, reduce compliance risk, build stronger internal controls, and better understand the financial story behind their operations.
One thing clients consistently appreciate is our relationship-driven and educational approach. Many come to us feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or behind financially. We focus on creating clarity — helping clients understand not just what needs to be done, but why it matters and how it connects to their long-term goals. The aim is for every client to feel supported, informed, and confident in their financial systems rather than intimidated by them.
I have also been intentional about how the firm has been built. From the beginning, I wanted the brand to reflect professionalism, reliability, and trust — growing steadily through quality work and strong relationships rather than chasing rapid expansion. The phrase “audit-ready” has become central to our brand because it captures the level of organization, accountability, and preparedness we help clients achieve and maintain.
At its core, I am most proud that the firm reflects both my technical expertise and my values. I wanted to create something that combines high-level financial guidance with genuine approachability — a place where clients feel comfortable asking questions and having honest conversations about their challenges and goals.
Our work ultimately goes beyond numbers. Good accounting is about helping people build sustainable businesses, make informed decisions, protect their funding, and create long-term stability. Whether we are supporting a startup, a nonprofit, or an established business owner, our goal is to provide the financial clarity and guidance that helps clients move forward with confidence.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
While entrepreneurship can sometimes feel isolating, I have not built this journey entirely on my own. My family played a major role in shaping my work ethic, resilience, and commitment to education and professionalism — and that foundation has carried me through every stage of this work.
I am also grateful to the professors, managers, and experienced professionals who helped strengthen my technical knowledge and professional judgment throughout my career. Their guidance, whether formal or informal, has had a lasting impact on how I approach my work.
On the business side, mentorship through SCORE has provided valuable perspective as I continue growing the firm, and organizations like the Maryland Black Chamber of Commerce have helped me connect with other entrepreneurs and become more involved in the local business community.
Most importantly, I am grateful to every client who has trusted me with their business and their finances. That trust means everything. Each client relationship has shaped the growth of this firm and reinforced my commitment to providing reliable, professional, and genuinely relationship-driven service.
